Received a tax bill when you were expecting a refund?

It can be an unwelcome surprise, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you made a mistake.

A tax bill often happens when the tax withheld throughout the year isn’t enough to cover the total tax you need to pay.

Three common reasons include:
• Working multiple jobs
• Receiving taxable Centrelink payments
• Earning income from a side hustle

Your final Tax Return brings all your income and tax withheld together. If there’s a difference between what you’ve already paid and the total tax you owe, you could receive a bill.

To reduce the chance of a surprise tax bill, claim the tax-free threshold from only one employer, check your payslips to see how much tax is being withheld, ask your employer or Centrelink to withhold extra tax if needed, and set some money aside for income that hasn’t already been taxed.

Save this post for later or share it with someone who may find it helpful.

Don’t let these common receipt myths catch you out at tax time.

Here are three things every taxpayer should know:

1. You don’t need to keep every original paper receipt
A clear and accurate digital copy is generally accepted, provided it contains the required information.

2. A bank statement isn’t always enough
It can show that you paid for something, but it may not explain what you purchased or how the expense relates to your work.

3. The $300 rule isn’t an automatic deduction
If your total work-related expenses are $300 or less, you may not need written evidence for some claims. However, you must have spent the money yourself, be entitled to the deduction and show how you calculated your claim.

Tax records generally need to be kept for five years from the date you lodge your Tax Return, so staying organised throughout the year can save plenty of stress later.

With the FREE One Click Life Receipt Tracker, you can:

✅ Store receipts and invoices in one secure place
✅ Organise expenses by financial year
✅ Link receipts to the relevant Tax Return
✅ Access your records when you need them
✅ Keep your evidence ready if the ATO asks

No more searching through emails, screenshots, gloveboxes or drawers at tax time. Simply upload your receipts as you go, and they’ll be ready when it’s time to lodge.

Noticed a little extra in your pay? Australia’s latest tax cut could be why.

From 1 July 2026, the tax rate on income between $18,201 and $45,000 dropped from 16% to 15%.

The lower rate only applies to the portion of your income within this tax bracket, not your entire salary.

In most cases, you’ll receive the benefit gradually throughout the year, with less tax withheld from each pay and a little more money in your bank account.

However, this doesn’t automatically mean you’ll receive a larger refund at tax time.

Your final tax result still depends on your total income, deductions, tax offsets and how much tax was withheld throughout the year. If you’ve already received the benefit through your regular pay, it won’t be added to your refund again.

Even a small tax cut can make a difference—but knowing when you receive the benefit can help you understand what to expect at tax time.

Key Tax Deductions for Hospitality Workers

Working in hospitality often comes with out-of-pocket expenses. Depending on your role and the ATO’s rules, some of these costs can be tax deductible.

Eligible expenses can include union fees, compulsory or occupation-specific uniforms, protective clothing, laundry costs for eligible work clothing, tools and equipment, work-related phone use, and training connected to your current job.

Our latest guide covers some of the most common tax deductions for hospitality workers, helping you understand what you can claim and lodge with confidence.

Remember, you can only claim an expense if:
✔ It directly relates to earning your income
✔ You paid for it yourself and weren’t reimbursed
✔ You have the required records to support your claim
