Today we traded cost data for a day gardening at Perth City Farm.
Our day started with a tour and introduction to sustainable urban farming before we pulled on our gloves and digged in (literally 😊).
It was hands on and loads of fun as well as being a lovely way to hang out with colleagues and get a good dose of Vitamin D.
We highly recommend booking a Perth City Farm Corporate Volunteering Day for your next team building activity. 5 stars 💫.

Cost Estimating is a Team Sport 🤝
One of the biggest shifts we’re seeing in the industry is how estimating actually happens day-to-day.
It’s no longer one person working in isolation with their own spreadsheets and versions. It’s a connected workflow - across teams, disciplines, and project stages.
When everyone is working from the same up-to-date data, things start to change:
Fewer discrepancies between estimates
Better alignment across teams
More confidence in decision-making early on
It sounds simple, but having a shared data environment - a single source of truth - removes a lot of the friction we’ve all experienced at some point.
If you’re interested in exploring a more connected way of estimating, head to www.rawlhouse.com.au.

April Market Insight: What’s Driving Construction Costs in 2026?
Our latest Rawlinsons Market Insight highlights a market balancing strong pipelines with increasing cost volatility.
Here’s what we’re seeing:
🔹Construction output has reached record highs, with ~$80B of work completed in the December 2025 quarter alone.
🔹Dwelling approvals are up ~20% year-on-year, supporting a sustained pipeline.
🔹Labour shortages and productivity constraints continue to challenge delivery.
🔹A global fuel crisis is driving cost escalation across materials, freight, and plant.
🔹2026 escalation forecasts sit between 3-8% - with potential upside risk of +6-9%.
Across the country, conditions vary - from “overheating” markets in Perth and Brisbane to more subdued activity in Sydney and Melbourne - but the common thread is clear:
➡️ Risk is increasing
➡️ Pricing certainty is reducing
➡️ Early decision-making is more critical than ever
We’re also seeing a clear shift in contracting behaviour, with:
✔️ Shorter tender validity periods
✔️ Increased use of escalation clauses
✔️ Greater focus on risk-sharing
Key takeaway:
Projects that prioritise early procurement, realistic escalation allowances, and collaborative risk management will be best positioned to succeed.

Fuel prices are up… and construction costs are following
It’s not just at the pump - rising fuel costs are already hitting the construction industry through:
🔺 Material price increases
🚛 Higher freight costs
⏱ Longer lead times
Our latest Market Insight reveals projects could see cost increases of up to +9% if current conditions continue.
So what does this mean?
👉 More risk in contracts
👉 Faster-moving pricing
👉 A bigger need for smart cost planning
Now more than ever, staying ahead of market changes is key.
