At Tall Tree Subiaco, we believe that art is not about creating a “perfect” picture or producing something that looks a certain way. It is about the process — the experience, the exploration and the joy of creating. 💛

Our learning environments intentionally offer children opportunities for open-ended art play, where there is no right or wrong way to create. Instead, children are encouraged to explore materials, experiment with different techniques and express their ideas in their own unique ways.

🎨 It celebrates the process, not the product – We focus on what children discover, feel and learn while creating, rather than what the finished artwork looks like.

🌈 It supports individuality and creativity – Every child has their own ideas, interests and ways of expressing themselves. We celebrate these differences rather than expecting every child to create the same thing.

🤲 It encourages exploration – Children can mix colours, make marks, layer materials, paint with different tools, experiment with textures and discover what happens when they try something new.

🧠 It develops problem-solving and confidence – When children are free to make their own choices, they learn to take risks, make decisions, try again and trust their own ideas.

💭 It gives children a voice – Art provides another powerful way for children to communicate their thoughts, feelings, imagination and experiences.

🌿 It allows children to connect with materials – Paint, clay, charcoal, natural materials, recycled resources and everyday objects can all become tools for creative discovery.

At Tall Tree Subiaco, you may not always see the same beautiful artwork displayed on every wall — because we value the child behind the artwork. 💚

One child may carefully mix colours. Another may cover the page with energetic marks. Someone else may spend twenty minutes exploring the feeling of clay between their fingers. There is no “right” way.

We celebrate every child’s creativity, artistic expression and unique way of exploring the world. ✨

At Tall Tree Subiaco, we believe that some of the most meaningful learning experiences can come from the simplest things — the natural world around us. 🌱

We intentionally incorporate natural resources into our children’s learning environments, giving children opportunities to explore, create, experiment and discover using materials such as leaves, sticks, stones, shells, wood, sand, flowers and other treasures from nature.

✨ Why are natural resources so valuable?

🌿 They inspire creativity – there are no set rules for how a child should use a stick, a pinecone or a piece of wood. Children can imagine, design and create in their own unique ways.

🪵 They encourage open-ended learning – natural materials can become anything a child imagines, supporting problem-solving, critical thinking and flexible thinking.

🌸 They support sensory development – children can touch, smell, feel, compare and investigate different textures, weights, shapes and colours.

🐚 They connect children with nature – spending time exploring natural materials helps children develop curiosity, respect and a sense of belonging to the natural world.

🤲 They support hands-on learning – children learn through doing, experimenting and making discoveries for themselves.

There’s something special about growing up surrounded by community. 💚

At Tall Tree Subiaco, we love making the most of our local neighbourhood and creating opportunities for children to connect with the community beyond our centre.

We believe children learn through connection — with their educators, friends, families and the community around them.

Recently, children from our Kindy and Toddler rooms had a wonderful opportunity to explore Subiaco Square Market Park, supporting their gross motor development, physical play and connection with the local natural environment. 🌳🛝

Through these experiences, children can explore, move, discover and build a strong sense of belonging within their local community.

🌻 Remembering Aabis: A Celebration of Love, Life and Community 🌻

On 26 August, our Tall Tree Subiaco community came together to honour and celebrate the short but beautiful life of Aabis — a precious little girl who touched the hearts of so many in our community.

Aabis was deeply loved by her family, educators and the children who shared their days with her. On this special day, Aabis’ family, children and educators came together to remember her with love. We sang Happy Birthday together, shared precious moments and celebrated the beautiful little person she was. 💛

The children and educators wore yellow, inspired by the sunflower — a flower that Aabis’ family lovingly associates with her. Like a sunflower, Aabis brought warmth, brightness and love into the lives of those around her. 🌻

We are incredibly grateful to Aabis’ family for allowing us to share this special time with our Tall Tree community and to remember Aabis together.

As part of remembering Aabis, we are also sharing the important message “Influenza is not just the flu.” Aabis’ family had booked an influenza vaccination appointment for her on 5 May. Sadly, she became unwell in the days before her appointment.

We share this information to raise awareness and encourage conversations about influenza vaccination and the ways we can help protect our children, families, educators and wider community.

Influenza can be a serious illness, particularly for young children. We encourage families to speak with their GP or healthcare professional about influenza vaccination and what is recommended for their child.

Today, we remember Aabis with love, gratitude and a commitment to caring for one another. 🌻💛

📚✨ Book Week in Action at Tall Tree Subiaco! ✨📚

What a wonderful Book Week it has been! Our children have been celebrating their love of books through imaginative dress-ups, engaging learning experiences, and plenty of special moments shared with educators and friends. 💛

At Tall Tree Subiaco, we believe that a love of reading begins in the early years. Through stories, songs, conversations and shared reading experiences, we create meaningful opportunities for children to develop their language, communication, imagination and early literacy skills — all while having fun! 🌱📖

Our reading-mat sessions have been a particular highlight, giving children the opportunity to explore stories together, listen, talk, ask questions and share their ideas in a warm and supportive environment.

A very special thank you to our wonderful Tall Tree families who generously donated books to help support children and families with limited access to learning resources. Your generosity helps us build a stronger, more inclusive community where every child can discover the joy of books. 💛📚

While Book Week may be coming to an end, our love of books never stops! 🌟 We’ll continue creating opportunities for children to discover new stories, explore their imaginations and develop a lifelong love of reading throughout the year.

Science Week at Tall Tree Subiaco!

Our Oak Room children were invited to become curious scientists during Science Week, exploring a series of fun and engaging experiments designed to spark wonder, encourage questions and help children discover how the world around them works!

Through hands-on experiences, the children explored colour mixing, rainbow walking water and celery colour experiments, making predictions, observing changes and sharing their ideas with educators and peers. They also explored the exciting reaction behind a volcano experiment, discovering how different materials can interact and create surprising results!

These experiences encouraged children to observe, investigate, experiment and problem-solve, while developing their natural curiosity and confidence as young learners. Most importantly, we loved seeing the children’s excitement as they discovered that science can be found everywhere!

At Tall Tree Subiaco, we believe that when children are given opportunities to explore through hands-on experiences, they develop a deeper understanding of their world and a lifelong love of learning.

Book Week at Tall Tree Subiaco!

We are excited and ready to celebrate Book Week at Tall Tree Subiaco, and we warmly invite all our families to join us in fostering a lifelong love of reading!

Families are invited to:
- Bring your child’s favourite book to share and read with their peers
- Dress up as a favourite book character
- Donate a book to help children who may not have enough access to books and reading resources

Throughout Book Week, our educators will invite children to participate in special Book Week experiences, filled with engaging stories, shared reading and opportunities to explore the joy of books together.

These experiences support children’s early literacy development, imagination, vocabulary and communication skills, while encouraging children to connect, share ideas and develop a deeper appreciation for stories.

Together, we can make reading a joyful, meaningful and inclusive experience for every child.

EYLF Connection: Learning Outcome 5 – Children are effective communicators, as children engage with stories, develop language and literacy skills, and share their ideas and experiences with others.

Kaya Subiaco Families,

As the new season began on 1 August, the children also embarked on a new learning journey inspired by the Indigenous seasonal calendar. This season celebrates one of the world's oldest living cultures and marks a time of nesting and blooming in the natural environment.

Throughout a range of play-based learning experiences, the children explored native birds, plants, and the changes they can observe in nature. These experiences encouraged curiosity, respect for Country, and a deeper appreciation of the local environment and the rich knowledge shared through Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives.

Kyah Subiaco families,

Children across our service have taken part in meaningful experiences that support the development of lifelong oral health habits. Through engaging storytelling, hands-on experiences, and shared discussions, children explored the importance of oral health and hygiene practices while developing curiosity and understanding around caring for their teeth and overall wellbeing.

It has been wonderful to see children actively participate, ask questions, and build healthy habits through play-based learning experiences.
