Friends of the Shelley Rossmoyne Foreshore through the years 🌱

On Australia Day 2026, Friends of the Shelley Rossmoyne Foreshore (FoSRF) received the Community Citizen of the Year Active Citizenship Award from the City of Canning. The award recognised more than 32 years of volunteering, caring for the land, and nurturing community.

"FoSRF prides itself in actively working alongside our local council and ensures that we collaborate with all relevant management bodies, seeking input from experts as well as sharing our learnings with the wider urban landcare network and educational institutions," explains active member, Colma Keating.

📸 These photos show the growth and impact of FoSRF, from a bushcare day in 2001 to weeding in 2026, and receiving the award at the city's Australia Day Family Fun Day.

"It reminds us how people and relationships make the difference as well as the incredible changes on the ground as we rehabilitate our strip of neighbourhood nature."

Colma Keating has been involved with the group since the very beginning in 1993.

"I have a passion for plants and people. I love that I can both care for our natural world as well as do that alongside my local community. From a society perspective it enables me and others to contribute and give back, I also know it brings personal satisfaction to myself and our other members.

"As we often work in exposed sites next to the dual-use-path, it also presents a high profile to anyone walking, jogging, cycling – so we become a great example of community volunteering, inviting them to join us."

Nominations for the 2027 Community Citizen of the Year Awards are currently open. If you know a group like Friends of the Shelley Rossmoyne Foreshore, nominate them below 👇

Celebrating active citizens on Australian Citizenship Day 💫

Australian Citizenship Day (17 September) is an opportunity to acknowledge the privilege Australian citizenship gives us, and the responsibility we have as Australian citizens.

Contributing to community is a huge part of Australian life and culture – it benefits people and place, and helps build a sense of belonging.

The Community Citizen of the Year Awards recognise those who are active citizens – who do their bit, get stuck in and support their community.

On Australian Citizenship Day, nominate an individual, group or event that positively contributes to your community.

Nominations for the 2027 Awards are now open until 31 October.
