In our dryland sledding community, we spend a lot of time looking out for our dogs and our sledding buddies. Today is a reminder to look out for the people beside us too.

R U OK? Day might be today, but the message is Ask R U OK? Any Day — because life happens every day, and a conversation can make a real difference when someone is going through life’s ups and downs.

If you notice that someone doesn’t quite seem themselves:

ASK — “Are you OK?”

LISTEN — Give them your attention, with an open mind and without judgement.

ENCOURAGE ACTION — Help them think about what might make things easier, including professional support if needed.

CHECK IN — Don’t let the conversation end there. Follow up in the days and weeks afterwards.

You don’t need to be an expert. Sometimes you just need to be the mate who notices, asks and genuinely listens.

Whether we’re at a race, training in the forest, travelling with the dogs or chatting online, let’s keep looking out for one another.
