David Paton MLA : The Election Victory That Ended His 10-Year Question

David died twice after being struck head-on by a four-wheel drive—and exactly ten years later, he was elected as a Member of Parliament.

In this deeply personal podcast conversation, David recounts the cycling accident that left him trapped beneath a vehicle for 50 minutes. His surgeon rated his injuries nine out of ten, with ten representing death. After four and a half months in hospital, he had to learn to walk again and was told he might never walk or ride a bicycle again.

He proved both predictions wrong.

But the physical recovery was only part of his journey. David opens up about PTSD, anxiety and depression—and the question that followed him for a decade: “Why did I survive?”

When he won his parliamentary seat exactly ten years after the accident, he says he finally found his answer and a renewed sense of purpose.
