That’s a wrap on Term 3! 🎉

And just like that, Term 3 has come to an end! 💫

From singing and games to stories, conversations, characters and cultural celebrations, we hope our little Mandarin Stars have continued to grow in confidence and, most importantly, love learning Mandarin. ❤️

Now it’s time to take a well-deserved break! 🌈

🌕🏮 中秋节快乐！Zhōng qiū jié kuài lè! 🏮🌕

Today is 中秋节 Zhōng qiū jié — Mid-Autumn Festival, a special time for family, togetherness and celebrating under the full moon. 🌝

Traditionally celebrated on the 八月十五 bā yuè shí wǔ — the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar, 中秋节 is a time when families come together to 团圆 tuán yuán — reunite and enjoy the beautiful moon.

For many families, it is the simple moments that make 中秋节 so special — sharing a 月饼, looking up at the moon, telling stories and spending time together. ❤️

🌙 Chinese Character Highlight｜月 yuè

As Mid-Autumn Festival approaches, there’s no better time to learn about one of the most beautiful characters associated with this special celebration — 月 yuè, meaning moon. 🌕

But did you know 月 is also a very useful character that appears in many everyday Chinese words?

🌙 月亮 yuè liang — moon
📅 月 yuè — month
🎂 月饼 yuè bǐng — mooncake
🌌 明月 míng yuè — bright moon

And when we see 月 as a character component, it can also appear in many words related to the body, such as 脸 liǎn (face) and 腿 tuǐ (leg).

At Mandarin Stars, we love helping children discover that Chinese characters are not just something to memorise — they tell stories, connect ideas and help children make sense of the language. ✨

As we look up at the moon this Mid-Autumn Festival, we hope our little Mandarin Stars will see 月 yuè and remember a little more about the wonderful world of Chinese!

🌟 How far has your child come with Mandarin?

After learning Mandarin for some time, children often know much more than they realise — from understanding and speaking, to recognising characters, reading and writing.

That’s why we believe a language test can be a meaningful milestone in their learning journey. 🌱

🌿 Learning doesn’t always happen inside the classroom.

When our Mandarin Stars students learn about nature, we take the learning outdoors — where they can explore, observe and discover for themselves.

With their workbooks in hand, our students searched through the natural environment, looking closely at what they could find and connecting what they were learning in Mandarin with the world around them.

Because sometimes, the best classroom is the one right outside our door. 🌱

🔥 Chinese Character Highlight｜火 (huǒ)

When you see 火 (huǒ), you might notice that the character itself looks a little like flames — but did you know that 火 (huǒ) can also become part of many other Chinese characters? 🔥

One fun example is 炎 (yán), made by putting two 火 (huǒ) characters together. Two fires = 炎 (yán), meaning heat, flame or scorching hot! 🔥🔥

You’ll also often see 火 as a 部首 (bùshǒu), or radical, written as 火字旁 (huǒ zì páng) when it appears on the side of a character.

Characters with 火字旁 (huǒ zì páng) are often connected to fire, heat, light or things involving burning.

✨ 火 (huǒ) — fire
✨ 炎 (yán) — heat / flame
✨ 灯 (dēng) — lamp / light
✨ 烧 (shāo) — to burn / cook
✨ 炒 (chǎo) — to stir-fry

It’s amazing how much we can discover from just one simple character! 🌟
