Peter Bolt started campaigning for a surf reef at Middleton Beach in 1990. The first feasibility study came in 2003. Today the rock sits down at the Port of Albany, waiting to go in the water.

Two ways to create your lantern for Carrying the Fire!
On Saturday 7 November 2026, thousands of handmade lanterns will illuminate the coastline from Emu Point to Binalup/Middleton Beach, and everyone can take part.
1️⃣ Join a FREE Workshop:
All materials are provided, and sessions are suitable for all ages:
• SAT 12 SEP | 12:30pm – 2:30pm | Kwornt Lantern Workshop
• MON 14 SEP | 4:00pm – 4:55pm OR 5:00pm – 5:55pm | Banksia Lantern Workshop
• MON 5 OCT | 9:00am – 10:30am | Sea Star Workshop (Recommended ages 4–12)
• SAT 10 OCT | 1:30pm – 3:30pm | Sea Star & Banksia Workshop (Children & caregivers welcome!)

Imagine standing on the sand at dusk as a continuous string of light stretches from Emu Point to Binalup / Middleton Beach, holding one of those unique lanterns in your hands.
Carrying the Fire is a monumental, participatory light artwork taking place on Saturday 7 November, and everyone is invited to take part. As night falls, thousands of lamp-bearers will gather along the coastline.
Whether you’re an Albany local, living in the Great Southern, or visiting for the weekend, everyone of all ages is welcome to take part.
Brought to life by and under the artistic direction of Annette Carmichael, Carrying the Fire is a massive community light event deeply rooted in Menang Country.
How to participate:
--> Craft Your Lantern: Join a free workshop or download instructions to build a lantern inspired by Country, such as the resilient biyarra (banksia), kwornt, sea star, or moodjar flower.
--> Host a Workshop: Get your school, business, sporting club, or community group involved.
--> Light Up the Beach: Stand shoulder-to-shoulder with thousands as we illuminate the coastline together.
