✨Advanced Art - Maria Merian✨

Join master-painter Elizabeth Marruffo as she guides you through the traditional painting techniques she learnt while studying in Florence. From preparing compositions and transferring images, to working with watercolour and ipen, this eight week course provides students with a deep understanding of the way a traditional artist worked.

This term we will be practicing pen and ink techniques as well as watercolour techniques while we study the famous botanical illustrations of the scientist and artist Maria Merian. She was famous for documenting the metamorphosis of insects at a time when those around her believed insects emerged from the mud.

Merian was a great influence on the art of two Australian sisters from the 1800's - Harriet and Helena Scott. Their luminous and detailed studies of Australian plants, flowers, bugs and butterflies will be looked at in detail as we work on our own line studies, tonal studies and finally a finished copy of one of their works.

Students should expect to develop their mastery of watercolour processes and techniques as well as practice pen and ink illustration techniques.

Our small class size of only 12, means that each student will get the feedback and attention they need in order to achieve their best outcome.

Sunday morning session runs at 10:00am – 12:00midday from the 2nd of August until the 20th of September

This course is recommended for ages 11 +

Note for New Students: No previous experience with painting is required in order to join this class, however it is suited to older students as the process we teach does require students to be patient and have the ability to maintain interest in a long-term project.

✨Applied Art with Elizabeth Marruffo✨

In Applied Art this term we will be looking at the beloved and hugely influential artist Frida Kahlo. We will look at her collection of votive paintings and Nichos which inspired her own work.

Nichos are a type of bright and colourful Mexican folk art which resemble small dioramas. They are often devotional but sometimes merely fun and are intended to symbolise a prayer or a wish to give thanks to some good fortune.

We will talk about our good fortune and what we might like to devote our thanks to in our own work. Students will be encouraged to let their inventiveness run wild with access to a huge range of craft materials for their dioramas. Our Nichos will be completed with tin doors and so students will need to consider the element of surprise in their work too.

Our small class size of only 12, means that each student will get the feedback and attention they need in order to achieve their best outcome.

✨Junior Art with Elizabeth Marruffo✨
The Beloved Frida Kahlo and her Birds

In this course students will be inspired by the birds and animals painted by the hugely popular Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. We will learn about her life and important contributions to the art world as we use various materials to make our own interpretations of birds found in her paintings.

Frida is famous for her self portraits with animals so we will include a portrait of our own pet or favourite animal. Students will decorate elaborate tin frames for their paper craft paintings and finish the term making a lightweight needlefelted bird. We will even be able to have a bird flight race in the final class of term!
