Improving the lives and normalising the conversation around mental health for those working in Western Australia's hospitality industry.

10/08/2026

For many regional hospitality venues, backpackers and travelling workers are an essential part of the team.

Their experience matters.

When people are welcomed, supported, and given the skills and confidence to succeed, they're more likely to enjoy their time in hospitality and continue building their careers in the industry.

But if they're left feeling unprepared or unsupported, one difficult experience can shape how they see hospitality forever.

Creating mentally healthy workplaces isn't just about retaining staff. It's about ensuring every person who joins our industry has the opportunity to feel safe, supported, and valued from day one.

πŸ’™ A positive first experience can make all the difference.

Kindness doesn't have to be grand to make an impact.

A smile before a busy shift. Checking in on a teammate. Saying "thank you." Offering help without being asked.

These everyday moments create something bigger than we often realise. They build trust, strengthen teams, and remind people they're not facing the day alone.

The culture we want to work in starts with the actions we choose today.

πŸ’™ Be the reason someone feels supported.

A mentally healthy workplace is one where people feel safe to speak up.

Psychological safety isn't about lowering standards. It's about creating an environment where people can ask for help, share concerns, learn from mistakes, and contribute with confidence.

When people feel heard and respected, teams become stronger, communication improves, and everyone benefits.

πŸ’™ Healthy workplaces start with safe conversations.

Behind every meal is a person.

Hospitality workers bring passion, creativity, and care to every shift. But they're also human beings with lives, challenges, and emotions beyond the kitchen or dining room.

A difficult moment or delayed order should never become a reason for abuse.

A little patience. A little kindness. A moment to pause before reacting.

These small actions can make a big difference to the wellbeing of the people working hard to create a great experience for everyone.

Because respect should always be part of the service.

πŸ’™ Let's create a hospitality culture where both guests and workers feel valued.

The best support starts with knowing what to do.

Healthy Mind Menu's Standard Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training equips hospitality professionals with practical, evidence-based skills to recognise when someone may be struggling, respond with confidence, and guide them towards appropriate support.

Together, we can build workplaces where people feel safe, supported, and empowered to look out for one another.

What an incredible few days on the road!

Our Healthy Mind Menu Mid West Roadshow has been all about connecting with the hospitality community and sharing practical mental health and wellbeing strategies.

A huge thank you to our supporting partner The City of Greater Geraldton, The Lobster Shack Cervantes for your incredible hospitality and to ibis Styles Geraldton (Accor) for your warm welcome and support throughout our stay.

It was fantastic to meet so many passionate venue owners and managers in Geraldton at our Creating Mentally Healthy Venues workshop. Your commitment to supporting your teams and strengthening workplace culture is inspiring.

We also had the opportunity to speak with students at Geraldton TAFE, where we met with apprentice chefs to talk about mental health, resilience and the importance of looking after ourselves and each other from the very beginning of our careers.

Thank you to everyone who welcomed us, shared your experiences and is helping build a healthier hospitality industry across regional WA.

The numbers tell an important story.

Research from R U OK?'s hospitality campaign found that 80% of hospitality workers believe mental health challenges are a significant issue in the industry, while half wished someone at work had simply asked if they were OK during the past year.

These statistics highlight something powerful: creating a mentally healthy workplace doesn't always begin with a policy. Sometimes, it starts with a genuine conversation.

At Healthy Mind Menu, we're committed to giving hospitality teams the knowledge, confidence, and practical tools to support one another and create workplaces where everyone feels seen, supported, and valued.

πŸ’™ Because looking after people is just as important as looking after guests.

In hospitality, we're often taught that "the customer is always right."

But supporting great service should never come at the expense of a person's wellbeing.

While many workplaces have clear policies around how team members treat one another, conversations about healthy boundaries between guests and staff are often overlooked.

Creating mentally healthy workplaces also means recognising that everyone deserves to be treated with respect, regardless of their role.

Respect isn't one-sided. It helps create safer environments, healthier teams, and better experiences for everyone.

πŸ’™ Because looking after the people behind hospitality is just as important as looking after the people they serve.
