Current competitors and State Squad athletes are encouraged to register as officials and rotate through different roles, including coaching, refereeing and judging, table officiating, marshalling and athlete support.

You don’t need to be experienced in every role – this is your opportunity to learn! You’ll receive guidance and mentoring while gaining practical experience and helping our newest competitors take their first steps into tournament karate.

Karate WA is bringing its Regional Workshop to the Wheatbelt, with the workshop being held in Gingin on Sunday 25 October.

The workshop is open to all Karate WA members and will provide opportunities for athlete and instructor development, as well as for parents and volunteers to learn more about the sport and how they can get involved.

💛 R U OK? DAY | A CONVERSATION CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE 🥋

Today is a reminder that sometimes the most important question we can ask is a simple one:

“Are you OK?”

At Karate WA, our dojos are more than places to train. They are communities where friendships are formed, confidence is built and people look out for one another.

Your instructor, coach, teammate, parent or club member may be someone you trust. If things aren't feeling quite right, you don't have to keep it to yourself. Starting a conversation with someone you feel comfortable with can be an important first step.

And as instructors, coaches, parents and teammates, we can all play a part too. Notice when someone seems a little different. Take the time to check in. Listen without judgement. Sometimes simply knowing that someone cares can mean more than we realise.

Karate WA has wrapped up another fantastic 2026 Karate WA League season, following a successful Shotokan Open on Sunday 30 August.

The final League tournament of the year brought together athletes from across Western Australia for a great day of competition, with both Developing and Open divisions providing opportunities for karateka of different ages and experience levels to step onto the tatami.

Congratulations to all athletes who competed throughout the day. We saw some fantastic performances across both Kata and Kumite, along with great sportsmanship, determination and respect between competitors.

The full results from the 2026 Shotokan Open are on the Karate WA website. Congratulations to all of our medal winners and to every athlete who represented their club – whether you walked away with a medal or gained valuable competition experience, we hope you enjoyed being part of the event.

A Huge Thank You to Our Karate Community

Events of this size simply cannot happen without the support of a large number of people working both on and behind the tatami.

Karate WA extends a sincere thank you to our referees and officials, who once again gave their time and expertise to ensure competition was conducted professionally and fairly throughout the day.

Thank you also to our table officials and marshals. These are vital roles in keeping each tatami operating efficiently, getting athletes where they need to be and helping the tournament remain on schedule.

To our coaches, thank you for supporting and guiding your athletes throughout the tournament and for the contribution you continue to make to the development of karate in Western Australia.

We also thank all of our parents and families. From early starts and travel to helping athletes prepare, volunteering and supporting from the sidelines, your contribution to our tournaments and to our athletes is greatly appreciated.

And finally, to our athletes – thank you and congratulations. It has been wonderful to see athletes continue to develop throughout the 2026 League season, with our Developing divisions providing an important introduction to competition and our Open divisions giving athletes the opportunity to continue testing and developing their skills.

The Shotokan Open brings our 2026 Karate WA League season to a close, and Karate WA would like to thank every club, athlete, coach, referee, official, volunteer and family who has supported our League tournaments throughout the year.

The League is about more than medals. It provides an important competition pathway where athletes can gain experience, build confidence, develop their skills and compete alongside karateka from clubs and styles across Western Australia.

While our League season may be finished, Karate WA competition for 2026 isn’t over yet!

KickStart provides another fantastic opportunity for athletes to get onto the competition floor, gain valuable experience and try their first event.

We look forward to welcoming everyone looking to try a tournament to the tatami in October.

This Bullying No Way Week, Karate WA is encouraging our karate community to show how small acts can have a big impact.

One of the simplest things you can do? Invite someone to join you.

We’re inviting all current karate students to bring a friend along to their dojo for a FREE Come & Try karate session.

It might be a school friend, neighbour, cousin or someone who could benefit from being welcomed into a positive and supportive environment.

Karate is about much more than learning techniques. It helps develop confidence, respect, resilience, discipline and a sense of belonging – values that extend well beyond the dojo.

🥋 GUARDIAN GIRLS INSTRUCTOR COURSE – LIMITED PLACES AVAILABLE! 💜

Karate WA is encouraging our female instructors to take advantage of a fantastic development opportunity and register for the upcoming Guardian Girls Instructor Workshop, being held on 5–6 September.

The Guardian Girls program provides an opportunity for instructors to further develop their skills while helping empower women and girls through karate and practical self-defence. We would love to see strong representation from our WA karate community and encourage clubs to identify eligible female instructors who would benefit from becoming involved in the program.

Who can register?

To be eligible, participants must:

🥋 Be female
🥋 Be 18 years of age or older
🥋 Hold a Black Belt
🥋 Be a current Karate Australia member
🥋 Hold a current Karate Instructor Accreditation
🥋 Be available to attend both half-day training sessions on 5 & 6 September

⚠️ Places are limited and registrations close 20 August.

If you meet the requirements, we strongly encourage you to put your name forward. Likewise, Heads of Style and club instructors – please share this opportunity with eligible women within your dojo and encourage them to register.
