OK, so the Dockers might be playing tomorrow, but there’s something else nearly as exciting that I need to tell you about.

I’ll be turning up on The 4WD Adventure Show at the special time of 5 pm Saturday on Channel 7, straight after the AFL grand final. I was lucky enough to travel to WA’s Great Southern to catch up with presenter Dan Paris, on behalf of the Royal Agricultural Society of WA, to meet some of our Perth Royal Food Award winning producers.

Now, I know it might be hard to settle down to the show after a Dockers win, so don’t worry if you miss it. You can stream the show whenever you like on 7Plus and come along on a fabulous WA food and beverage adventure with Dan and I which culminates in a cook-up over fire at West Cape Howe winery, served up with their amazing wines. Tough gig, I know!

Thanks to the 4WD Adventure Show and the Royal Agricultural Society of WA for having me along. I'm available any time for more foodie fun just so you know!

I’ll be cooking up some of the delicious produce I tasted on the show at the Perth Royal Show’s Long Paddock Stage with Masterchef Alex Crisp. Do drop by from Monday to Thursday at midday, take a load off and hear more about what our state has to offer and how to prepare great-quality food in a flash. Oh and enjoy a taste of the final dishes.

Tomorrow’s 4WD Adventure Show features the following WA producers:

There is no reason your salad shouldn’t be as interesting to look at as it is to eat.

When I’m styling a salad at home, I use much the same approach I do on set. I think about flavour, colour, texture and how everything comes together on the plate.

It doesn’t need to be complicated. A little intention can turn simple seasonal produce into something you genuinely can’t wait to put on the table.

Here’s how I approach the situation..

1. Choose your hero. Start with produce that’s in season and looking its absolute best.

2. Pair complementary flavours. Choose ingredients that enhance rather than compete.

3. Think about colour. Create contrast or embrace a beautiful single colour palette.

4. Build in layers. Start with a base, hero your main ingredient, then add the supporting players.

5. Bring in texture. Balance soft with crunchy, creamy with crisp, smooth with toasted.

6. Finish with intention. Fresh herbs, citrus zest, toasted nuts, edible flowers or a drizzle of beautiful herb oil can completely transform a simple dish.

A little styling, yes , but mostly it’s about making food visually, texturally and deliciously interesting.

Oh hey..
Just sharing a few unsolicited thoughts on a Monday.
Food is a one of my greatest joys and if you’re following along I’m guessing it’s one of yours too. There is so much noise these days around how, why, when and what you should eat. My advice.. decide what’s important, skip the rest, listen to your body, enjoy what you choose to eat. Don’t let the noise ruin your relationship with food.
My wish for anyone reading is that they have access to enough food and have people around them to share it with. X Kate

Yes we capture food, but what is food without people?
Lonely, that’s what it is!
Showing your face or providing a human for your audience to connect to is so valuable as part of a well rounded content shoot. Humans connect with humans.

Value doesn’t come from having a signature look. It’s having the skills to create the right look for your clients brief.

Give an experienced creative team a pile of beautiful WA plums and see where they take it.

From light and fresh to dark and moody, playful to polished, this shoot was an exercise in creative versatility — exploring how one ingredient can tell completely different visual stories through styling, lighting, composition and creative direction.

Because great food content isn’t about having one signature look. It’s about understanding the story you want to tell, then bringing together the right creative approach to tell it.
