Sitting still is a skill.

Cookie — parked, waiting, watching, and not going anywhere until released.

It looks like nothing at all. It's actually the most useful thing a dog can learn, and the thing that makes every other part of owning one easier. The door goes and the dog doesn't. Dinner happens and the dog doesn't. Visitors arrive and the dog stays exactly where it was put.

Taught clearly, practised often, and it becomes the default.

Rottweiler, coming in close, and completely delighted about the whole situation.

There's a particular look a big dog gets halfway through a good run — mouth open, ears back and just pure happiness. This is it.

Bondi.

German shorthaired pointer, ears somewhere over the horizon, all four feet off the grass!

Pointers are a lot of dog. Enormous engine, and it needs a proper outlet — space to genuinely open up rather than trot around a suburban block.

Look at that face. That's a dog getting exactly what it needs.

Koda — down, settled, switched off, in the middle of a paddock with plenty going on.

Everybody wants the recall and the flashy stuff, and fair enough, it looks great. But the skill that actually changes your life at home is the off switch. A dog that can lie down and do nothing without being asked twice.

It gets taught the same way everything else does. Clearly, and often enough that it becomes the default.

Some dogs run because they've been asked to. This one runs because the alternative is not running, and that is clearly unacceptable!

Cattle dogs need a job. If nobody gives them one they'll invent one, and you rarely like the one they pick!

So here they get the paddock, the run, and something to think about. Out multiple times a day, properly out, on grass, with someone watching.

That's why they sleep at night. And it's why the ones who've stayed before drag their owners through the gate on the way in 🐾
