Between us, we’ve spent more than 10 years working in the mining industry. Long swings, time away from family, fatigue, pressure and isolation can all add up. We’ve also seen first hand the difference one genuine conversation can make.

Sometimes it isn’t a big intervention. It’s sitting beside a mate after shift. A chat over a b**r. A yarn around camp when everything has gone quiet. Asking, “Are you actually alright?” and giving them the time to answer properly.

You don’t need the perfect words, and you don’t need to have all the answers. Sometimes the most important thing you can do is listen, stay present and let someone know they don’t have to carry everything alone.

That’s part of what getting away means to us too. Fresh air, less noise, good company and the time to have conversations that might not happen anywhere else.

So check in on your mates. Not just today, but whenever something feels off.

Ask the question, listen to the answer, and if your gut tells you something isn’t right, ask again.

A night away, a sunset and a few hours with your mates might not look like much.

For someone sitting beside you, it could mean everything.
