Fires are still raging across Borneo and Sumatra, threatening Critically Endangered orangutans and the rainforests they call home.

According to Indonesia's Ministry of Forestry, wildfires have already burned more than 202,000 hectares nationwide from January to June. And the dry season has barely begun. Fueled by a severe Godzilla El Niño, the fire season is expected to peak in October.

Smoke haze is putting lives at risk, and wild orangutans are especially vulnerable.

Our brave teams are on the ground with local fire-response crews, fighting the flames, stopping the spread, and protecting orangutan forest. When they're not on the frontlines, they're rescuing orangutans caught in the fire's path, and relocating them to safe, protected forest. Fuelled by one of the driest seasons Indonesia has seen in years, deadly wildfires are threatening orangutan habitat. As their homes burn, orangutans are pushed out of the forest, putting them at even greater risk. It’s heartbreaking to think how many orangutans have already lost their lives as the fires ravage on.

Patrol teams in the Way Kambas National Park in Sumatra have been BUSY lately, doing everything they can to protect elephants and their forest home.

From fighting fires, patrolling forests and destroying snares... all the way to community education! 🧑‍🎓

Recently, teams held a special awareness day for 22 middle school students, sharing important information about Sumatran elephants and other amazing wildlife that depend on the Way Kambas forests for survival.

They shared all about the work of the River Patrol Team, how they help elephants, and how communities themselves can become part of the movement to protect precious elephants, and help keep their natural home standing and thriving. 🌳

Did you know drones are one of the best ways to monitor fire-prone areas? They are safe, efficient, and can reach remote areas that people can’t get to on foot.

That's why 39 Power of Mama members were recently trained in drone operation, so they can better protect precious rainforest and wildlife habitat from deadly fires!

Five women also became qualified drone trainers themselves. Now, they can pass on their skills and keep building the team's knowledge for years to come!

Indonesia’s Forestry Ministry ready to repatriate five orangutan babies found in India Initial information revealed that the orangutan babies are aged between one and five years old and were found in healthy conditions.
