Our thoughts on the recent changes to the NDIS...

Like many people across the disability community, we have been closely following the recently passed changes to the NDIS and considering what they may mean for participants, families, carers and the people who support them.

We recognise that the NDIS is not a perfect system. There are genuine issues that need to be addressed, including fraud, exploitation, inappropriate charging and practices that do not deliver meaningful outcomes for participants. We support reform that strengthens the integrity and long-term sustainability of the Scheme.

At the same time, we are concerned about the potential impact that reductions or changes to supports may have on the people the NDIS was created to support.

At The Peer Practice, we see every day what the right support can make possible.

Support can help someone build confidence and independence. It can enable connection with community, participation in everyday life and progress towards personal goals. It can also provide essential support to families and carers who are often carrying significant responsibilities themselves.

These supports are not simply line items in a budget. Behind every plan, funding category and policy decision is a person and a life.

We understand the need to ensure the NDIS remains sustainable for future generations. We also believe sustainability and participant wellbeing must be considered together.

When supports are reduced, the underlying need does not necessarily disappear. There is a very real risk that responsibility instead shifts to families, carers, health services, community organisations and, ultimately, back to the person with disability.

We welcome stronger measures to address fraud, exploitation and poor-quality service provision within the NDIS. Participants deserve a system in which funding is used responsibly and genuinely contributes to their goals, independence and quality of life.

But as these reforms are implemented, we believe the voices and experiences of people with disability must remain central to the conversation.

For our participants and families who may be feeling uncertain about what these changes mean for them: we see you, we hear your concerns, and we will continue to advocate for support that is person-centred, meaningful and grounded in dignity, choice and connection.

Reforming the system should ultimately make it stronger - not make the people it exists to support feel less secure within it.

Three months ago, I became a mum. ๐Ÿ’›

Since then, I've learned that:

๐Ÿ‘ถ Babies have impeccable timing when it comes to interrupting hyperfocus.

๐Ÿ˜ด Sleep deprivation makes ADHD extra interesting.

๐Ÿง  You can forget what day it is while somehow remembering exactly which nappy brand leaks the least.

๐ŸŽต And 00s dance music is surprisingly effective for boosting your mood during the fifth load of washing for the week.

I've just published a blog sharing my honest experience of the first three months of motherhood with ADHD. It's a reflection on the challenges, the overwhelm, the love, the support I've needed, and the things that have helped me navigate one of the biggest life changes I've ever experienced.

Some days I've felt completely capable.

Some days I've cried in the shower.

Most days I've done both.

If you're a parent, expecting a baby, have ADHD, support someone who does, or simply enjoy honest stories about life's messy and beautiful moments, I'd love for you to have a read.

An informed participant is an empowered participant. ๐Ÿ’œ

With recent conversations putting a spotlight on NDIS spending and invoices, our Leadership Team want to remind everyone of a simple truth: asking questions isnโ€™t being difficultโ€”itโ€™s how you protect your funding and build trust. Here is the bottom line:

โœจ Transparency builds trust: You deserve to feel comfortable asking providers to explain how your funding is being used.

โœจ Nuance matters: While some charges reflect the genuine costs of safe, quality care, itโ€™s completely understandable why people are looking closer at their invoices right now.

โœจ Questions = Advocacy: Asking questions helps protect your funding, exercise choice, and keep the sector accountable.

At the end of the day, participants and providers want the exact same thing: NDIS funding used responsibly to help people live meaningful lives. ๐Ÿ’œ

๐Ÿ”ฅ The Fire and the Flood: Navigating the Epic Intensity of RSD ๐ŸŒŠ

Two years ago, I received an ADHD diagnosis that finally helped me make sense of something that had shaped my life for decades: Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD). For me, RSD isn't just being sensitive to rejection. It's the stomach drop when someone doesn't reply. It's convincing yourself you've done something wrong when there is no evidence. It's feeling every emotion so deeply that it can become overwhelming.

In my latest blog, I share my personal experience of living with RSD, the challenges, the heartbreak, the healing, and the lessons I've learned about self-compassion along the way.
This piece is for anyone who:
๐Ÿ’› Feels things deeply
๐Ÿ’› Lives with ADHD or suspects they might
๐Ÿ’› Struggles with self-doubt or overthinking
๐Ÿ’› Loves someone who experiences RSD
๐Ÿ’› Needs a reminder that they are not "too much"

One of the biggest things I've learned is this: "The first person who needs to want you, is you." If you've ever felt rejected before rejection even happened, I hope this story helps you feel a little less alone. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Read the blog here: https://www.peerpractice.com.au/sharing-our-stories
