𝑾𝒆𝒅𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒅𝒂𝒚 𝑾𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔 - 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗼 𝗨𝗿𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗶

Primo Urbinatti was an Italian who migrated to WA from Italy in 1928 and settled in Pickering Brook. He was 21 when he arrived, following his father who had already settled there and who had sent him the fare to join him.

When Primo first arrived in Pickering Brook he was very disappointed, having expected it to be more established, and described it as ‘just a wild place’. On his first night he had to sleep in a horse shelter.

The first few years were a difficult time for Primo. After some time scrounging for work and living in a bush camp, he and his friend Salvatore Pen*sse rented a returned soldier's block and grew fruit and vegetables. They worked hard, but everything they made in the first year went into rent and development costs. Their truck was continually breaking down, and in 1935 a huge storm destroyed their whole crop, which was a major financial setback.

Primo almost decided to return to Italy, but he took a risk and borrowed money to buy the block. In need of a wife, he wrote to his father about a girl he had known back in Italy, and was surprised to find out that she was still unmarried and was keen to join him in Australia. Primo and Ida Protti were married by proxy, and she arrived in Pickering Brook in 1937. They had two children together.

During the Second World War Primo was very disappointed with the attitude of the locals, finding that he lost friends and encountered restrictions against him in his work, purely because of his race. However, after the war life returned to normal. Primo and Ida lived happily in Pickering Brook, and were very active socially, with Primo being a founding member of the Pickering Brook Sports Club.
