A 4 year old presented after their teacher reported trouble seeing the classroom board, and examination revealed a significant difference in prescription between the two eyes consistent with astigmatic amblyopia risk. This was treated with full time glasses, with follow up planned to check whether patching therapy is needed if the eyes remain unequal.

A 3.25 D difference in astigmatism between the two eyes

For this patient, we fitted coloured contact lenses to improve the cosmetic appearance of arcus senilis while ensuring a comfortable fit and a patient-content result. We also referred the patient to their GP to rule out underlying hyperlipidaemia.

Thank you to OSWA and ECO WA for inviting us and allowing us, as young optometrists, to share insight into private practice optometry to the OD students. We hope you all gained some insight into real-world optometry.

This patient presented following cataract surgery with a distance-vision IOL, complaining of gradual blurring and glare, more noticeable with night driving. Examination revealed significant right posterior capsule opacification affecting visual clarity.

Post-YAG capsulotomy, vision improved but the patient remained mildly undercorrected for distance, likely due to residual refractive error rather than the PCO itself. She elected to proceed with full-time distance and office spectacles to optimise clarity for night driving and office-based tasks.

This patient presented with mild right ocular irritation and blurred vision. Examination revealed conjunctival injection, and central corneal dendritic ulcer on fluorescein staining, and corneal oedema consistent with HSK. Management included Acyclovir 3% ointment (Zovirax) and oral Acyclovir 400mg, both five times daily for 7 days.
