IMPORTANT: Department ceases charging surcharge from 1 October 2026

In MIA Notice 10 - 14 August 2026 the MIA noted that the Reserve Bank of Australia has confirmed that surcharging on debit, prepaid and credit card payments across the eftpos, Mastercard and Visa networks will be banned from 1 October 2026, following its Review of Merchant Card Payment Costs and Surcharging. As the Visa Application Charge is typically paid by card through ImmiAccount and currently attracts a surcharge, the MIA contacted the Department of Home Affairs to clarify how the change will affect payment of the Visa Application Charge.
The Department has now confirmed that it will cease charging the card payment surcharge from 1 October 2026 and that there will be no related change to VAC fees.
