Recently I traveled with Adelaide University to coach two eights participating in the 2026 International Nanjing Universities Rowing Open, where we met and raced teams from England, the USA, New Zealand China and Australia.

While we selected crews, and trained hard for this event, the rowing was only a small part of the experience we had in Nanjing.

We had the opportunity to experience some Chinese culture, from visiting football games to taking a river cruise and exploring a part of the world that was very different from home.

One of the lovely things about international sport is the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds and cultures, and discover how much you have in common despite those differences. A shared love of rowing is a pretty good place to start!

For our athletes, it was an opportunity to experience something new, meet new people from across the international rowing community and see a little more of the world beyond our own clubs and programs.

Experiences like this are a great reminder of why I love rowing. It’s a sport that can take you to incredible places, introduce you to wonderful people and give you opportunities to learn. Both on and off the water.

At Ratio Theory Rowing, I want to help athletes get more out of their rowing. That means developing their technique, understanding their training and building the confidence to take on new challenges, wherever their rowing journey takes them.

A fantastic experience, some great memories and plenty of new connections made along the way.

Thanks to everyone who helped make the trip possible, and to the teams who made us feel so welcome.

Good luck to Mackenzie as she represents Australia at the FISU Summer World University Games! 💛💚

I first coached Mac when she was at school, before she was recruited by Oklahoma University on a rowing scholarship. Since then she has been rowing with her team at the university and has continued to work incredibly hard.

Now she has been selected in the Australian women’s coxless four for the FISU Summer World University Games, which is such a fantastic achievement.

After Mackenzie gained selection, she reached out to me at Ratio Theory Rowing to help structure her training while she was in the interim between university training and joining her Australian representative crew. I put together two months of training for her with a focus of maintaining her racing fitness, while building her strength and aerobic base.

It’s been so lovely to watch and be a part of her journey from schoolgirl rower to representing Australia on the international stage.

Good luck Mackenzie! We’ll be cheering you on from home! 💚💛

Good luck to Emily as she takes on her first ever Women’s Henley Regatta in the Aspirational Lightweight single scull!

Emily’s progress with Ratio Theory Rowing this season has been remarkable. As an online athlete, Emily has made it through to Henley injury free, taking 14 seconds off her 2km and an incredible 20 seconds off her 5km. Her hard work, consistency and determination have paid off in a huge way, and we’re excited to see her represent herself and her club on one of rowing’s biggest stages.

Enjoy every moment, Emily. Your season is already a success! We are all behind you and can’t wait to see what you can do on the Thames.

You’ve had a strong start. You’re out in front. And you look across and see another crew is moving faster and gaining ground.

What do you do in this moment?

The instinct is to panic, to throw away your race plans and put in some extra pushes, and hike the rate… or give up, mentally check out and let them come through.

But if you want to finish the race and be proud of the result, here are 4 tips to keep your race under control.

If you’ve ever stopped on an erg test, this is for you.

One bad experience is just that … one bad experience.
Learn from it. Assess your pacing, goals, mentality and preparation, then make the small changes that help you go into your next test with confidence.

If you’ve had a tough testing experience, tell me about it. DM me what happened and let’s rebuild your confidence before your next test.
