We hope you're having a sssuper World Snake Day! 🐍

Today we're celebrating the Suta nigriceps; more commonly known as the Mallee black-backed snake, black-backed snake, copper snake and Mitchell's short-tailed snake.

This Suta nigriceps was sighted during our autumn biodiversity monitoring survey at Geegeela, a 102-hectare nature reserve in South Australia's south-east. By placing roof tiles around each site , our Science and Knowledge team can observe and record small reptiles and invertebrates, helping us understand the variety of species that make their home across each reserve, to plan and implement relevant conservation actions.

Snakes are found everywhere in Australia and play a vital role in ecosystems. Remember, observing from a distance and leaving them alone helps keep everyone safe.

Have a fantassstic day! 🐍
