Celebrating Melbourne Day on August 30. Celebrate everything that's great about our city. Great coffee, too. Melburnian, proud and loud!

Melbourne Day is the anniversary of the first permanent European settlement: the founding of Melbourne on 30 August 1835. As Melbourne reopens after COVID disruptions, we call on the city and Melburnians to celebrate like never before all that makes our city great and to affirm the values that make us the envy of the world: tolerance, inclusivity, creativity, resilience and respect. Melbourne Day is also a time to celebrate and support our city's indigenous culture and heritage, and to remember the impact of European arrival on the people of the Kulin nation: the Wurundjeri (Woiwurrung), Boon Wurrung, Taungurong, Djajawurrung and the Wathaurung - who lived here for tens of thousands of years. On behalf of the people of Victoria, Melbourne Day Committee works with stakeholders - including council, businesses, authorities, community groups and tourism industry partners - to raise awareness of Melbourne's story, help correct the record about the founding of Melbourne and celebrate its anniversaries. All Melburnians are urged to celebrate our city's birthday. Hold your own event or join an official one โ€“ no matter where in the world, celebrate on 30 August.

Celebrating ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐ŸŽ ๐ฒ๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ฌ of marvellous!

Melbourne had many unofficial names in its first years, including Batmania, Barebrass, Bearport, Dutergalla, Bareheep and most popularly "the Settlement".

The first official name proposed was Glenelg.

But Governor Sir Richard Bourke overruled this, and on his visit in March 1837 decided on Melbourne โ€” after the then British Prime Minister William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, who resided in the village of Melbourne in Derbyshire in the English Midlands.

Our Derbyshire namesake is also known for the birthplace of Thomas Cook, founder of the world-wide travel agency.
