Strathfield Council is a local government area in Sydney's Inner West. Strathfield Council is a medium sized Council located in Sydney’s Inner West.

The area of the Council comprises approximately 14.1 square kilometres and has an estimated population of 40,000. Strathfield Council has seven councillors, including the Mayor who is elected by the Councillors. The CEO is appointed by the Council to manage the administration of the Council and in turn, the CEO appoints staff within Council. The Mayor of Strathfield Council is Cr Matthew Blackmore and the CEO is Henry Wong. Strathfield Council has adopted its community strategic plan - Strathfield 2030. The Strathfield 2030 has been developed to provide a preferred vision of the Strathfield community by the year 2030 and articulates the local community's long-term desirable future and a common direction for the Municipality. It ensures that as an organisation Council is better prepared for future challenges. The incorporation of local government in the Strathfield district commenced on June 1885 when the Municipality of Strathfield was incorporated covering the suburbs of Redmire (renamed Strathfield), Homebush and Druitt Town (now part of Strathfield South). The Homebush Municipal Council was incorporated on 13 June 1906 . In 1947, Homebush Municipal Council amalgamated into Strathfield Council. On 1 January 1949, the Municipality of Enfield was abolished and the former West Ward was joined to Strathfield Municipality. Further changes to the structure of local government were made on 1 July 1993, when the NSW Local Government Act took effect. This Act changed the responsibilities of the Mayor and Councillors and separated the functions more clearly from those of the General Manager. The new Act required local government to become more responsible, accountable and transparent in its operations.

$500,000 secured for Switch On Strathfield!

Strathfield Council has received $500,000 through the NSW Government’s Permit/Plug/Play Program, led by Transport for NSW, for a project aimed at making street events easier and more affordable to organise.

From pop-up markets to music and cultural celebrations, the project will explore how Churchill Avenue and Strathfield Square, and the Homebush West laneway, could become more welcoming places for our community to come together.

We’ll look at ways to make organising an event simpler, alongside ideas such as lighting, power and shared event equipment. Your feedback will help shape what’s planned for these spaces.

Have your say: What would you like to see? Share your ideas by Friday 16 October 2026.

DID YOU KNOW: That kids under the age of 16 can ride their bikes on the footpath? And if you are an adult supervising a child under the age of 16, you can ride on the footpath too!

Additionally, with our three train stations in our LGA (Strathfield, Homebush and Flemington) easily accessible from almost anywhere in the LGA by bike within 20 minutes, this means your kids cycling to and from school is not only possible, but also super convenient.

Staying active and healthy in Strathfield has never been easier. So gather your kids, grab your helmet, jump on your bike, and enjoy the ride – safely of course! 🚴‍♀️
