Last year, more than 274,000 Australians were scammed. Not because they weren’t paying attention. Because scams are sophisticated, convincing, and designed to catch people off guard.
Behind that number are parents, friends, neighbours and colleagues. No one’s just a number.
There are three steps that can help you avoid being scammed:
Stop before you act.
Check who you’re really dealing with.
Protect yourself and others by reporting the scam to Scamwatch.

Nikita received a friend request from someone claiming to be a British pilot. The profile looked realistic, complete with photos in the cockpit. They exchanged messages for four to five weeks. Then the message came: his son had been in an accident and he needed $5,000. Nikita hesitated but his distress sounded genuine. She sent the money. She was blocked the next day.
“[It] made a big hole in my wallet and I was in tears. I never thought it would happen to me. But it can happen to anyone.”

The theme for this year's Scams Awareness Week is "No one's just a number". Victims of scams are not faceless statistics. They are people with names, families, and lives disrupted.
Lindy got a notification on her phone stating that a laptop purchase had gone through. Yet, Lindy hadn’t bought a laptop. Panicked, she called the number provided in the message. The person who answered said they were from PayPal. They told her they needed to close her account to stop the transactions. She then received a text message with a code from PayPal. Believing the phone call to be legitimate, she shared the code with the person on the phone. Lindy had money stolen and was put into debt.
