Wedderburn Hazard Reduction Emergency 26-9-26

This afternoon NSW RFS crews along with an FRNSW bulk water tanker were conducting a hazard reduction burn at Wedderburn. Crews had burnt 40 hectares when increasing hot and gusty winds pushed the fire out of control, with crews being impacted by 15 metre flames. The fire jumped Katanna Road, with numerous spot fires escaping containment. As crews worked to defend the road several RFS tankers were cut off and overrun by fire, with the trucks catching on fire and crews enacting their emergency burn over procedures.

A significant number of RFS and FRNSW crews along with aircraft responded to assist, with all trapped firefighters being located and successfully extracted to awaiting paramedics. 18 firefighters were assessed by paramedics with 1 taken to hospital. Several tankers were damaged or destroyed. Firefighters continued to work in conjunction with aircraft to bring the fire under control, managing to protect all properties along Katanna Road and managing to contain and extinguish the spot fires. Crews remain on scene into the night continuing to manage the remainder of the fire.

School Fire St Marys 20-9-26

Just after 5pm this afternoon Fire & Rescue NSW crews responded to reports of a fire at St Marys Public School. Crews arrived to find multiple classrooms alight, with fire spreading through the roof of the building into multiple parts of the school. Firefighters in breathing apparatus worked with numerous hoselines and tools to pull apart the roof and extinguish the fire, working alongside two Aerial Pumpers. Crews were able to successfully contain the fire to the original building, preventing it spreading into the rest of the school complex.

Strathfield Factory Fire 20-9-26

Just before 4am this morning Fire & Rescue NSW crews responded to reports of a Factory Fire on Dunlop Street at Strathfield South. Crews arrived to find a fire in a mechanical workshop within a row of factory units, with fire burning through the roof of the building and beginning to spread into surrounding businesses.

Firefighters in breathing apparatus used power saws to cut their way into the workshop, as well as into the adjoining units, facing intense smoke and fire as they entered the building and worked to contain the fire. Firefighters used Aerial Pumper 47 to extinguish fire burning on the upper level mezzanine which crews were unable to access due to collapse. Despite the intense conditions, firefighters successfully managed to bring the fire under control and prevent it to spreading through the rest of the complex or into surrounding homes.

Never Forget 🇦🇺🇺🇸

Today we remember the 343 fire fighters, 60 police officers, 8 EMTs and countless civilians who died in the most barbaric, pointless, horrific attack the world has ever seen.

An unusual token of respect, randomly numbered is Fire and Rescue NSW 343 station Katoomba. When the number was assigned to the station, 343 meant nothing, just a random a number. It now represents not only bravery, heroism and the stance of the free world against terrorism but also the supreme sacrifice made by the FDNY on the 11th of September, 2001.

Without the efforts of the FDNY, the 20,000+ people inside the World Trade Centre would not have stood a chance against intense fire raging throughout the towers and the imminent structural collapse.

We will never let the sacrifices of the men and women of the FDNY on that day go to waste.

Fire Rescue NSW Station 89 Terrey Hills

Following the severe bushfires of January 1994 which burnt across the Warringah Pittwater area, local residents and government advocated for the establishment of a full time fire station in Terrey Hills to support the increasingly stretched volunteer crews of the district. With projected growth forecast for the area, Fire & Rescue NSW (then NSW Fire Brigades) purchased a site on Myoora Road, Terrey Hills, where a new fire station was built with facilities to house a full crew of permanent firefighters.

Following the completion of the station, the decision was made not to immediately open the station and to instead wait for the development of the local area to expand before staffing it with firefighters. During the years since, the station has been used for a number of interim roles including housing Forestville Fire Station’s permanent crew during renovations at their own station. The station was expanded during the 2000s to include training facilities which surrounding FRNSW crews use to conduct specialist training such as search & rescue and breathing apparatus operations.

The projected growth in the area has remained quite small, as a result the area has a very low number of incident callouts with very few major fires since 1994. In the interim NSW RFS continue to provide cover for the area, including the use of paid RFS staff and volunteer firefighters working pre organised shifts to cover gaps from local volunteer crews, responding to the small number of callouts supported by surrounding FRNSW stations.

With anticipated developments in Ingleside, Belrose and other surrounding areas and the ever expanding growth of the region as a whole, the station remains ready to be transitioned to full operations when required.

Ryde Truck Crash 2-9-26

Yesterday afternoon emergency services responded to reports of a truck rollover on North Road at North Ryde. Crews arrived to find a truck carrying construction materials had rolled onto its side coming down the hill, crushing the cabin into the steel guard rail. The driver and one passenger of the truck were able to climb free, however one passenger remained crushed between the wreckage and the armco railing.

Firefighters stabilised the truck with a winch, working from ladders with hydraulic rescue tools to cut apart the cabin of the truck, allowing paramedics to access the passenger and provide monitoring and treatment. Firefighters then worked with a combination of airbags and hydraulic rams, supported with large amounts of timber stabilisation, to slowly lift the truck off the railing.

An Alpha Heavy Towing Truck was positioned in case the patients condition rapidly deteriorated and crews needed to perform an emergency lift, along with staging additional equipment such as demo saws and thermal lance if the railing needed to be cut.

In a co ordinated effort between rescue and medical teams the truck was able to be lifted inch by inch enough to free the passenger, who was transported to hospital in a stable condition.

Bradfield Building Fire 20-8-26

This morning Fire & Rescue NSW and NSW RFS crews responded to a fire in a car wrecking yard on a rural property at Bradfield in Sydney's South West. Crews arrived to find a converted structure alight containing several vehicles, car parts and a gas cylinder powered forklift.

Firefighters in breathing apparatus worked to control the fire with multiple foam lines, managing to stop the fire from spreading into the rest of the wrecking yard. Multiple trucks were required to relay water, with the closest hydrants several kilometres away. Once the fire was extinguished RFS crews assisted with mop up and overhaul. One person was treated on scene by paramedics for burns.

Ultimo Building Collapse 3-8-26

Just before 11am this morning emergency services were called to Wattle Street at Ultimo where a building under demolition had collapsed onto an adjoining petrol station, crushing several cars and people standing nearby. First arriving crews located several people within the rubble, who were quickly removed and treated by paramedics. Two victims were transported to hospital with a further five assessed on scene.

Police and firefighters used drones and thermal cameras to search above the rubble as well as laser monitors to detect any further signs of collapse. No further victims were located and crews are working with local council, structural engineers and SafeWork to make the site safe.
