Kids often lack the words to explain what they're experiencing.

Stress and dysregulation show up as behaviour instead, a meltdown, a shutdown, a sudden burst of energy with nowhere to go. The behaviour is rarely the actual message. It's what's left once the words run out.

This session explores developmental neurobiology, autonomic stress responses, and emerging somatic approaches, and how each can help professionals better understand and support emotion regulation in both neurotypical and neurodivergent children.

AI could end humanity. But what does that uncertainty make your brain do?
Intolerance of uncertainty: the tendency to experience not-knowing itself as aversive.

Impulsivity: strong feelings can quickly turn into action, or reshape how you think, remember, and plan.

When the two combine, uncertainty can trigger checking, reassurance-seeking, and doomscrolling. The problem? The checking may briefly feel like relief, while actually feeding the anxiety loop.

The goal was never to solve the future. It's learning what to do with uncertainty.

Impulsivity in a neurodivergent student is often read as defiance, or as a behaviour needing correction. Four distinct neurological pathways can produce four very different classroom pictures, and each one calls for its own response.

This session works through seven neurocognitive profiles relevant to school-based practice, the influence of digital media on reward-seeking in the classroom, and formulation-first case conceptualisation, using two composite case studies as the throughline.

200 people. One number at intake. It predicted who'd stay sober before anyone said a word to them.

Bakhshipour-Rudsari and Karimpour-Vazifehkhorani (2021) tracked over 200 people entering addiction treatment and measured delay discounting at intake, essentially how fast a future reward loses its value the longer someone has to wait for it. That single score predicted who'd stay sober, who'd relapse, and who'd walk out of treatment. Before rapport. Before a single session.

We talk endlessly about motivation and insight in this field. Underneath both, there's a quieter system deciding how real the future actually feels to someone. It's wired in long before anyone walks through your door.

If your intake doesn't touch time perception, you're missing a variable that outperforms half of what we do ask.

Full mechanism, and how to work with it clinically, in my Psychology & Neuroscience of Impulsivity webinar, September 24. Comment "discounting" and I'll send you the article.

Self control runs on a system, and some days that system has more to work with than others.

A prefrontal system negotiating with a limbic system that wants relief right now. Some days the negotiation goes better than others, and that's simply a reading of how much capacity is available that week.

Meet Leo. Sarah has five apples and gives away two. It looks like a simple subtraction problem, but Leo freezes.

Why? He's processing several things at once: the math, why Sarah is giving the apples away, what every detail means, and what he's expected to do next. By the time he's meant to answer, the overload has already happened. The snapped pencil wasn't the problem, it was the aftermath.

Reducing the load often matters more than demanding a better output. Sometimes that's the actual first move.

Learn more about Leo's case and pathway breakdown in our upcoming webinars. Link in bio.
