German Shepherd Rescue Victoria
We are passionate about rescuing and rehoming German Shepherd dogs. German Shepherd Rescue Victoria Inc. How does our process work? How do we make this happen?
is a registered charity consisting of a passionate group of people dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming of German Shepherds. We are a not for profit organisation consisting solely of volunteers who donate their time and energy to the cause. Our network is made up of volunteer workers in areas such as:
• Transportation
• Foster care
• Dog training/ dog behaviourists
• Groomers
• Administrators
• Fundraisers and/ or individuals who donate. Once a dog is legally in our care we we will transport the dog to the foster care volunteer who will care for and provide a variety of necessary care/ requirements until the rescue dog is adopted out into a suitable new home. Our rescue pays for all food, beds, collars, leads and veterinary treatment while the dog is in the care of the foster care volunteer. Our Rescue will also cover costs associated de-sexing, micro chipping vaccination as well as the organisation for the treatment to take place. We rely heavily on volunteers and foster care volunteers, we can never have enough and without the kindness and generosity of these people we could not do the work we do. Just like any charitable organisation we rely on food donations for our foster care volunteers to feed the dogs in their care as well as on monetary donations to not only pay for the veterinary care and treatment but also to help support transportation costs for the rescue dogs into the care of the foster care volunteer or into their new adopted homes.

Today is National Police Remembrance Day, a day to remember and honour police members who have lost their lives whilst serving and protecting the community, through illness and other circumstances.
It is also a day to acknowledge Police members who continue to dedicate their lives to keeping us safe, working tirelessly during these challenging times.
We have a wonderful relationship with Victoria Police via the Dog Squad, and are very proud of Hunter, a GSRV Police Dog graduate. We also have many wonderful adopters and volunteers who are Police members.
Today is about honouring those who have fallen, those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. We acknowledge the heartbreak of the families and colleagues left behind and stand beside them as we thank those lost in the line of duty for their service.
Their sacrifice will not be forgotten, we will remember them.

COULD YOU BE CHEEKY CHARLIES NEXT CHAPTER?
2 weeks ago, we rescued 4-year-old Charlie, a female shepherd that was experiencing a life-threatening infection in her uterus, after having been used for breeding over and over again. Charlie had not one, but 2 life-saving surgeries, our community stood behind her, praying that she would make it through.
Charlie has been recovering in foster care ever since, yesterday she got the all clear from the vet and has healed beautifully. Charlie is well and truly over being crate rested and is ready to start living the life she has always dreamed of. Charlie is looking for her next chapter, whether it be a temporary foster home or as a foster with the view to adopt.
Charlie is a working line German Shepherd and is clever, motivated by both food and toys, playful, and wants to please; she is everything you want a shepherd to be. Charlie loves learning new things and has had some prior training, she knows her basic commands and a few extra tricks. Charlie hasn’t been out on a leash recently until coming into our care, so her leash manners will need some work in her new home. Charlie is an active girl and will need plenty of physical exercise; her brain also needs to be put to use through training, play, games and enrichment.
Charlie is being re-introduced to the world and takes most things in her stride, despite being 4 years old, she resembles a much younger dog who is still finding her place and experiencing things. Charlie can at times be quite puppy-like in her interactions and become mouthy when excited, whilst she isn’t a huge jumper, she would benefit from practising her impulse control and manners. Charlie would be best suited to a home where everyone is over the age of 5 and who have large breed experience.
Charlie is very people-focused, she loves her humans and is a friend to everyone she meets, especially if they have treats or want to play. Charlie loves to cuddle and has no interest in personal space, she will be a typical German Shadow, involving herself in daily chores and activities. Charlie is a bit of a dork; she is funny, cheeky and just steals your heart from the moment you meet her.
Charlie is very conflicted with other dogs, having only interacted with others when being bred from for so long, she is wary of their intentions and is lacking in dog social skills. Charlie has had some success co-existing in close proximity with another dog, but has been struggling with up close interactions, she is very unsure. When Charlie feels nervous on walks, she will bark voicing her concerns, however, is very easy to distract and re-engage with her handler.
Charlie will need to build her confidence up overtime, she needs to have positive experiences and work her way up to meeting others, knowing that she is safe and nothing bad will happen to her. For now, Charlie would be happiest as the only dog in her new home, she needs time to decompress and settle in without the pressure of constantly interacting with another dog, that is a goal both Charlie and her new human can work towards.
If you can foster Charlie and be her next chapter, the bridge between her horrible life before and her wonderful future, please complete a foster application via our website www.gsrv.com.au

SOUND ON 📣
Foster dog Rocco has revealed his hidden talent... He does an excellent siren impersonation 🚨🤣
Rocco's foster dad Carl was watching tv when a police siren came on... Next minute, Rocco is howling the house down and his foster sister Saria was running around barking concerned about what had triggered Rocco.
Fostering can bring unexpected moments of chaos and laughter, each dog has their quirks! ❤️

🔥CRATE TRAINING COULD SAVE THEIR LIFE🔥
We’re only 20 days into spring, and already we’re seeing out-of-control bushfires burning across Victoria. With a hot and dry summer predicted, now is the time to prepare, not when the fire is already at your door.
When you’re making your bushfire plan, don’t forget the four-legged members of your family. Make sure your pets are included in your emergency plan, and that everyone in your household knows what to do if you need to leave quickly. Because in an emergency, things may look very different from normal.
You could find yourself at a relief centre surrounded by unfamiliar people and animals. You may need to stay with friends or family where your dog needs to be separated from other pets. You may need to temporarily keep them outside, or safely confined in a crate.
That is stressful enough without suddenly expecting your dog to cope with something they've never experienced before. This is why crate training matters.
Teaching your dog that a crate is a safe, comfortable and rewarding place means that, if disaster strikes, you already have one less thing to worry about.
Crate training isn't about locking your dog away. It's about giving them a skill that could one day help keep them safe. Start slowly, make the crate a positive place, let them build confidence at their own pace, and practise regularly so that being in their crate becomes familiar rather than frightening.
If the worst happens, you don't want to be in a situation where your dog can't be safely contained, and you certainly don't want to have to make an impossible choice because you weren't prepared.
RSPCA Victoria has some great tips for getting started with crate training:
https://share.google/3aOECXfkp3nYapNYy
Kikopup also has a fantastic video on crate training:
https://youtu.be/dUzF0g0PwY4?si=OySY-vTyqDTKpQlS
We also highly recommend reaching out to a qualified trainer for help.
Put the work in now. It might be a skill they never need... but if they ever do, it could save their life. Because if disaster strikes, it’s too late to start training.
The man, the myth, the absolute legend!
Bill's biggest myth? That most people think their dogs are allergic to chicken...
Is that you? If so, get in touch with the LifeWise team to find out how you can improve your dog's gut health so they can stop missing out on tasty chicken treats 😁🍗

💚 𝗔𝗩𝗔𝗜𝗟𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗔𝗗𝗢𝗣𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 💚
Stunning big boy Kumo is 5 years old and is a long stock coat German Shepherd. Kumo had a tough start, living an isolated life and used for backyard breeding, he spent months in the shelter before coming into our care, Kumo is now ready for his next chapter, forever.
Kumo is a friendly big bear who just loves attention, he doesn’t quite understand his size and will enthusiastically lean in for pats, nearly taking your knees out in the process. Kumo can become overwhelmed with a lot of handling and prefers to interact on his terms, he is easily won over with treats and toys. Despite his age, Kumo can display some puppy-like behaviours and be very demanding (and a bit of a brat) when he wants to interact, he is best suited to a home where everyone is over the age of 12.
Kumo loves to play and is very cheeky; fetch, tug, find it games are all fun, he is up for any task where he gets to engage with his humans. Kumo is clever, and he learns quickly, but is also a stubborn boy who likes to get his way and will push boundaries and rules. Kumo will thrive with a confident handler that can be the leader, showing Kumo exactly what is expected of him and giving him clear feedback.
Kumo is treat and toy motivated, he has been learning his basic commands and enjoys learning new things but needs to keep practising his manners and focus. Kumo’s new human needs to be prepared to put the time and effort into Kumo, he has so much potential and will excel in the right hands.
Kumo hasn’t had much exposure to other dogs, when he sees them at a distance he will freeze and watch them, up close he will bark out of frustration, not quite knowing if he wants to interact or how he is feeling. Kumo will need to be the only dog in his new home, his new family need to be committed to working on Kumo’s engagement when he sees another dog, keeping him calm and neutral.
Kumo hasn’t been exposed to cats or other small pets, he loves chasing birds – he would need to be kept separate from any other animals in his new home.
Kumo will need an active home that will include him on adventures and outings, he is happy with a walk or a play/ training session and then will spend the day snoozing in the sun. Kumo thinks enrichment toys are the best and loves a challenge working out how to get food out of puzzles and treat dispensers. Kumo is easy to keep happy, he just requires consistent effort and attention, you will then have a best friend for life!
If you wish to adopt Kumo, please complete an adoption application via our website www.gsrv.com.au or email [email protected] if you are already on our waiting list.
