Alex is proudly leading Team MACA as Ride Captain MACA Cancer 200 Ride for Perkins.
Raising money for cancer research is a cause close to his heart, having witnessed both his mother and uncle face their own cancer battles.
Whether he's cycling to the airport, around town or fitting in training while on site, Alex is always finding ways to prepare for the challenge ahead. His family’s experience with the illness provides the added incentive to keep pushing through every kilometre.
Having first signed up for the ride four years ago, Alex said the best part of the MACA Cancer 200 campaign is seeing people come together to support such an important cause and the incredible fundraising efforts that make a real difference.

A huge thank you to Gateway Group WA for their incredible support of the MACA Cancer 200 Ride for the Perkins.
At our latest Team MACA fundraising event, Gateway Group WA General Manager Brett Baker proudly presented a fundraising cheque to Michael Bunting from the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, generated through their unique initiative, Harriet the Watercart.
For every hour Harriet works across WA mine sites, Gateway donates $10 towards vital cancer research. Named after Harry Perkins and proudly carrying the MACA Cancer 200 logo, Harriet continues to make a real impact both on and off site.
Thank you, Gateway Group WA, for helping drive meaningful change in the fight against cancer. 💙

John and Lindsey Moralee have found four legs, two wheels and one shared vision to raise as much money for cancer research as possible, is the perfect approach in the MACA Cancer 200 Ride for the Perkins.
The husband-and-wife duo has been doing the ride on a tandem bike for the past eight years and while it may have its ups and downs, they wouldn’t have it any other way.
“You either get a tandem and you get divorced, or you enjoy it,” John joked.
“We think it’s fantastic.”
The long-term supporters of the MACA Cancer 200, who taken part in the race 14 and 11 times respectively, look forward to the ride every year.
“It’s not a race, it’s not about that, it’s a great cause and a great social event,” John said. “And Saturday night’s huge with presentations from the Perkins and from the team captains and cancer survivors. It’s very moving.”
John, who also heads up the Perkins Alliance, said that for the Moralees, it’s all about doing their bit for cancer research.

Cameron Gessner had no idea that when he lined up at the start line of last year’s MACA Cancer 200 Ride for the Perkins, he was only seven months away from beginning his own cancer journey.
The news that he had stage 3 bowel cancer came like a bolt out of the blue for the fit and healthy 45-year-old.
“You get given a piece of paper that says, ‘mass suspicious of malignancy’,” Cameron said. “I couldn’t believe it.”
Despite his diagnosis, Cameron still hopes to ride in this year’s MACA Cancer 200, joking that it’s been easier to fundraise this year, smashing his goal of $2500 and currently hovering just below $9000.
“It’s much easier to raise money when you’ve got cancer and you’re going to do the ride,” he said.
“What the Perkins do and how the business supports it is pretty amazing.”

Meet Ellie, Shotfirer at McPhee Creek.
Ellie's passion for mining is palpable. And she hopes her enthusiasm might encourage other women to see the potential in the industry.
Ellie joined the McPhee Creek project at the very beginning, becoming the first shotfirer on site and helping lay the foundations for the operation's success.
Since then, she has played a key role in the project's growth, working closely with the team to deliver safe and efficient drill and blast outcomes. For Ellie, success at McPhee Creek comes down to teamwork and the collective effort of everyone on site.
Currently working as a Shotfirer, Ellie is expanding her skills and undertaking training to become a Drill and Blast Supervisor. She is also on track to become the first female supervisor at McPhee Creek.
She loves her job, the people and the banter on site, and urges other women to give it a go.

Have wheels, will travel … and fundraise.
That was the plan for Team MACA rider Shane Lindsay who decided to boost his MACA Cancer 200 fundraising efforts by dusting off his scooter and signing up as a DoorDash delivery driver whilst on R&R.
Shane has already surpassed his initial $5000 goal, raising more than $900 through DoorDash and said he will keep fundraising until the ride in October.
Like many riders, Shane has a personal reason for wanting to raise vital funds for the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, after his dad battled cancer in his early 50s.
Keep up the great work, Shane!
