October is Dyslexia Awareness Month, and in the Caribbean, awareness has been a long time coming.
I’m not here to raise awareness and disappear on November 1st. Dyslexia, Learning Disabilities, Neurodivergence, Structured Literacy, Science of Reading aren’t buzzwords to me, they’re the work. Every day. For kids who’ve been told they’re ‘lazy and just not trying.’
This month, we’re sharing what’s actually happening in our classrooms and our homes…so the next generation doesn’t have to wait as long as this one did. ❤️

Language matters. 💙💚
When we label children as “slow,” “lazy” or “dunce,” we risk defining them by a difficulty instead of taking the time to understand how they learn.
Some children process information differently. Some need more time, different strategies or the right support. That does not mean they are less capable.
Let’s move away from labels and focus more on understanding, support and potential.

Executive function challenges can show up as forgetfulness, difficulty staying organised, trouble starting or finishing tasks, and feeling easily overwhelmed. 💙💚
It is not always laziness or lack of effort. These are skills that can be strengthened with the right strategies and support.

Early identification can change a child’s learning journey.
I was grateful for the opportunity to conduct dyslexia screenings with a group of students in a local community on behalf of the Barbados Red Cross Society.
Screening early can help us understand where a child may be struggling and, most importantly, identify the support they need to become more confident learners.
