This study examines how Farmer Field Schools (FFS) strengthen environmental literacy among coastal paddy farmers in Bangladesh and how enhanced environmental knowledge contributes to the adoption of eco-friendly agricultural practices and improved productivity.
The findings demonstrate that investing in farmersâ environmental education can be a powerful and scalable pathway toward sustainable agriculture, particularly in climate-vulnerable regions. đąđ§ The study also highlights the broader relevance of environmental literacy and Farmer Field Schools across South and Southeast Asia.
Heartiest congratulations to the entire research team on this important achievement! đ Your dedication and collaborative efforts have contributed valuable evidence to the field of sustainable agriculture and socio-ecological research.
Wishing the team continued success and many more impactful contributions to research and practice! â¤ī¸đđ

20 July was World Chess Day. The day has been celebrated globally since the UN's recognition in 2019, marking the founding of FIDE on 20 July 1924. We are proud to share findings from one of the most distinctive studies GDRI has ever conducted â bringing chess into rural primary schools in southwest Bangladesh and measuring what it does to young minds.
Chess is played in over 170 countries and has long been associated with the development of strategic thinking, mathematical reasoning, executive function, patience, and the capacity to manage risk and uncertainty. But rigorous causal evidence from low-income rural contexts â where children have never seen a chessboard and resource constraints are severe â was almost entirely absent from the global literature.
GDRI, in partnership with Monash University and Deakin University, designed a clustered Randomised Controlled Trial in 16 government primary schools in Khulna and Satkhira â 8 treatment schools, 8 control. The 569 Grade 5 students in treatment schools received the FIDE 'Chess in Schools' programme: 24 hours of structured instruction and 6 hours of supervised practice delivered over three intensive weeks by national chess coaches, in coordination with the Department of Primary Education (DPE), Government of Bangladesh.
We tracked outcomes immediately after the programme and again 9â10 months later, using both PSC (Primary School Certificate) examination records and a battery of incentivised experimental tasks measuring risk preferences, time preferences, creativity, and sustained attention.
Our key finding: the chess programme significantly reduced risk aversion approximately one year after the training. This is not a trivial outcome â excessive risk aversion in low-income populations is associated with underinvestment in education, health, and productive assets throughout adulthood. We also found suggestive evidence of gains in mathematics and improvements in time consistency.
On World Chess Day, we celebrate the chess coaches, schoolteachers, DPE officers, and â above all â the 569 students in rural Bangladesh who picked up a chess piece for the first time and discovered that the game of kings belongs to everyone.

A roundtable in The Daily Star this week made it clear: Bangladesh still needs stronger data and evidence-based solutions to protect mothers and newborns.
At GDRI, we've just completed a project that speaks directly to this challenge.
Our "IVR Health Info for Maternal & Newborn Care in Rural Bangladesh" project tested a simple but powerful idea: could a toll-free phone call deliver life-saving maternal health information to rural women who otherwise have little access to healthcare guidance?
Using Interactive Voice Response (IVR) technology, we provided pregnant women in rural Bangladesh with free access to audio health modules covering antenatal care, safe delivery, and newborn care â directly on the mobile phones already in their homes. In a second treatment arm, women could also speak directly with a doctor about their health concerns.
We rigorously measured the impact on health-seeking behaviour and maternal and child health outcomes â from the antenatal period right through to the postnatal phase.
In rural Bangladesh, distance, cost, and lack of information are still barriers between mothers and the care they need. Our research generates the evidence that health policymakers and programme designers need to invest in solutions that actually work.

Best Wishes to All HSC & Equivalent Examinees!

đ¨âđ§âđĻ Happy Father's Day to every father, grandfather, and father figure who has ever sat with a child over a homework problem â or wished they knew how.
In rural Bangladesh, many fathers work long hours in agriculture, fishing, or day labour. They want the best for their children's education, but school systems rarely communicate with them in ways that are accessible or actionable. GDRI's Parent-Teacher Meeting intervention was designed to close that gap.
Across 76 government primary schools in Khulna and Satkhira, we worked with Monash University and the Department of Primary Education to introduce monthly one-to-one meetings between teachers and parents â including fathers. Each meeting lasted around 15 minutes and included a simple, personalised report card on the child's scores, attendance, and homework, along with concrete guidance on how to support learning at home.
The results: students in treatment schools gained 0.26 SD in Year 1 and 0.38 SD in Year 2 across all academic subjects. Crucially, parental engagement â including time spent helping with homework and monitoring school attendance â increased significantly.
What we learned is that fathers and mothers in rural Bangladesh are not disengaged from their children's education. They simply haven't been given the information or the invitation to engage. When we provide both, they show up.
This Father's Day, we celebrate every parent who shows up â and commit to building the systems that make it easier to do so.
