Preload: ventricular wall stress/tension at the end of diastole → related to ventricular EDV/EDP.
Clinically Measured by:
* Right heart → CVP
* Left heart → PCWP/PAOP
Afterload: force/wall stress the ventricle must overcome to eject blood during systole.
* ↑ Afterload → ↑ ESV → ↓ SV (if contractility and preload are unchanged).
* SVR is the major determinant of LV afterload.
* For the RV, PVR is the important vascular component of afterload.
