বিশ্বের শীর্ষস্থানীয় কৃত্রিম বুদ্ধিমত্তা (AI) ও মেশিন লার্নিং সম্মেলন 'NeurIPS 2026' (Neural Information Processing Systems)-এর মূল পর্বে (Main Conference) গৃহীত হয়েছে বাংলাদেশের একদল গবেষকের গবেষণাপত্র, “SEISMOS: A Statistical Signal Detection Framework for Semantic Chunking।”

Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST)-এর Industrial and Production Engineering বিভাগের একজন স্নাতক।

🚨 Excited to share that our paper, “𝐒𝐄𝐈𝐒𝐌𝐎𝐒: 𝐀 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐂𝐡𝐮𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠,” has been accepted to the 𝐍𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐈𝐏𝐒 2026 (𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤)! 🎉

Huge congratulations to Ishtiak Mahmud, Mominul Islam, Shahriyar Zaman Ridoy , Md Manjurul Ahsan, and Azmine Toushik Wasi for this work and the collaboration behind it. Excellent ideation by Mominul Islam and a flawless ex*****on by Ishtiak Mahmud!

Chunking is one of the less visible but important components of dense retrieval and Retrieval Augmented Generation systems. The way a document is divided determines what can be indexed, retrieved, and ultimately supplied to a model as evidence. Yet many existing systems still rely on fixed token windows, recursive splitting, or globally defined semantic similarity thresholds.
In SEISMOS, we approach semantic chunking as a statistical signal detection problem. The framework models cosine similarities between consecutive sentence embeddings as a document level signal and detects statistically meaningful semantic transitions. Rather than relying on document means or fixed similarity thresholds, SEISMOS identifies boundaries through variance normalized deviations in the embedding similarity signal.
Our analysis across four BEIR development corpora identifies several consistent statistical properties of these signals, including bimodal document structure, rapid survival decay of shallow local minima, and positive lag 1 autocorrelation.
Across five BEIR benchmarks, SEISMOS improves dense retrieval performance over fixed length, recursive, and production semantic chunking approaches while using the same operating configuration across datasets. The detector also transfers without corpus specific retuning to the held out TREC COVID corpus.

A key takeaway from the work is that useful retrieval boundaries may already be encoded in embedding similarity signals. Detecting those boundaries statistically provides an efficient and fully LLM free approach to semantic chunking.

This acceptance also marks a special milestone for CIOL. 𝐓𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞, 𝐂𝐈𝐎𝐋 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐥𝐚𝐛 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐑, 𝐈𝐂𝐌𝐋, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐍𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐈𝐏𝐒 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫. 🇧🇩
For a student led, community based research lab, this means a great deal to us. CIOL was built around a simple idea: create a space where motivated students can learn research by doing research, collaborate across institutions and disciplines, and contribute to serious scientific work regardless of where they start.

Huge congratulations to Azmine Toushik Wasi for leading this work, Mohsin Mahmud Topu and Mahfuz Ahmed Anik for their contributions, and to Dr Md Manjurul Ahsan for his guidance and support throughout this work!

Medical AI has achieved remarkable success in controlled, resource-rich environments, yet many of these advances fail to translate into real clinical impact across low and middle-income countries (LMICs). Our work argues that this gap is not simply a deployment challenge, but a deeper issue rooted in how medical AI systems are designed.

In this paper, we introduce Frugal Medical AI, a framework that treats resource constraints as first-class design objectives rather than afterthoughts. We advocate for:
🔹 Edge-native medical AI for settings with limited connectivity
🔹 Hardware-aware model design for constrained devices
🔹 Cross-modality generative translation to overcome imaging scarcity
🔹 Robust evaluation beyond accuracy, incorporating energy consumption, memory cost, latency, and clinical risk sensitivity

The central message is simple: medical AI should not only optimize for benchmark performance but also for real-world accessibility, sustainability, and equity.

This work builds upon our preliminary exploration presented at a CVPR 2026 Workshop by Md Manjurul Ahsan, where the idea received valuable discussions, encouraging feedback, and meaningful engagement from researchers across the community. We refined the framework further through those insights and expanded the vision toward a broader perspective on equitable AI deployment.

The Sixth ACM Conference on Equity and Access in Algorithms, Mechanisms, and Optimization (ACM EAAMO 2026) will bring together researchers from AI, machine learning, optimization, economics, HCI, and social sciences to explore how algorithmic systems can better serve society. We are honored to contribute to this interdisciplinary discussion through an oral presentation.

AI detectors are increasingly being used to judge human writing, especially in education and creative work. In our paper, we argue that these systems can unintentionally encourage conformity over originality, disproportionately affecting non-native English speakers and marginalized voices. We discuss why protecting creative freedom should be a central consideration as AI becomes part of how we evaluate human expression.

In this work, we argue that AI governance should move beyond laws alone. Just as standards like ISO 27001 helped operationalize privacy practices, we propose ISO like, machine-readable interoperability protocols that enable AI systems to communicate risk information consistently across borders. We envision standardized AI "nutrition labels" that report key information such as bias, energy usage, and data provenance, making responsible AI more transparent, interoperable, and accessible.

Looking forward to discussing these ideas during the poster session!
