Een bijzondere ontdekking onder de Zeedijk van Nieuwpoort. 🪖
Begin september startten de werken voor de ondergrondse parking van The Grand. Tijdens de uitgravingen werd al snel een imposante ondergrondse constructie blootgelegd, bestaande uit verschillende ruimtes waarvan de zij-ingangen momenteel nog onder het zand verborgen liggen.
Dat er zich onder de Zeedijk van Nieuwpoort-Bad nog sporen uit de twee Wereldoorlogen bevinden, was dankzij eerder historisch onderzoek al langer bekend. Wat we precies zouden aantreffen, bleef echter een vraagteken.
De exacte datering en functie van de constructie zijn nog niet volledig duidelijk. Op het gecementeerde dak zijn wel opvallende laarsafdrukken met twee rijen pinnen zichtbaar, wat mogelijk wijst op een militaire context uit de Eerste Wereldoorlog. In 1917 werd Nieuwpoort-Bad immers intensief ondertunneld door onder meer de 2nd Australian Tunnelling Company, die er een uitgebreid netwerk van loopgraven, dieptetunnels en dugouts aanlegde.
Maar de opgraving bracht ook een tweede verrassing aan het licht. Naast de reeds gekende steen met het jaartal 1870 — een stille getuige van de allereerste zeedijk, aangelegd in de jaren na de ontmanteling van de vestingstad, toen Nieuwpoort-Bad als badplaats werd ontworpen — kwam nu ook een steen met het jaartal 1880 tevoorschijn.
Vermoedelijk verwijst deze naar de inhuldiging van de nieuwe, verbrede zeedijk. Die werd destijds aangelegd in drie afzonderlijke stroken: één voor voetgangers, één voor ruiters en één voor wagens en karren — een indeling die veel vertelt over het mondaine kustleven van eind 19de eeuw.
Een team van archeologen is momenteel volop bezig om de constructie minutieus vrij te maken, te documenteren en te onderzoeken. Op basis van hun bevindingen wordt een gedetailleerd archeologisch rapport opgemaakt dat meer inzicht moet geven in de datering, functie en historische waarde van deze bijzondere ontdekking.

At the heart of Brussels, The Dome continues to take shape. 🏗️
The project has now entered another important phase, with the structural works reaching the highest level of the building. At the same time, the distinctive dormer windows are being carefully crafted in the workshop - each one an impressive 7.7 metres high and at least 2.25 metres wide - while the installation of the new external joinery is getting fully underway.
Behind the façades, preparations for the technical installations are nearing completion, bringing the building one step closer to its future use. Outside, the meticulous restoration of the historic façades is progressing, with skilled craftsmen from Renotec bringing back the architectural details and character of this remarkable building.
Step by step, the transformation of The Dome is becoming increasingly visible - preserving its historic identity while preparing it for a new chapter as a vibrant destination for living, working, shopping and leisure in the heart of Brussels.

At the heart of Brussels, The Dome is increasingly revealing its final form. 🏗️
Overlooking Place de la Bourse and surrounded by the vibrant Dansaert district, Sainte-Catherine Square and the Grand Place, this landmark restoration is entering an exciting new phase.
The historic façades are once again fully visible, while the original window proportions have been restored, allowing the building’s elegant Haussmann-inspired verticality to come back to life. As the scaffolding disappears, spectacular views over Place de la Bourse and Brussels’ historic centre are gradually being unveiled. At the same time, the meticulous restoration of the building’s historic façades has now begun, with skilled craftsmen carefully restoring the rich architectural details that define this iconic building.
Inside, construction continues at full pace. Works on the sixth and seventh floors are now underway, and with every new level, the project’s beating heart - the central atrium - becomes even more impressive.
The Dome is transforming one of Brussels’ most iconic buildings into a vibrant destination where living, working, shopping and leisure come together.

The Grand is helemaal klaar voor de zomer ☀️
Nu de restauratie van de buitengevels haar laatste fase bereikt, werden de gevelstellingen langs de Zeedijk verwijderd. In het zomerlicht komt de architectuur van volledig tot haar recht en toont The Grand zich zoals bedoeld: indrukwekkend en tijdloos.
In samenwerking met en lag de focus van de restauratie op het minutieuze herstel van de historische gevel- en erfgoedelementen. De simili-pierre geveldelen werden waar nodig zorgvuldig gerestaureerd, betonstructuren gereconstrueerd en decoratieve details verfijnd afgewerkt. Het resultaat is een monument dat opnieuw de grandeur uitstraalt waarvoor het ooit werd ontworpen.
In de allerlaatste fase van de façadewerken rest ons nog de afwerking van de iconische toren en koepels, waarna het monument helemaal stellingvrij zal worden gemaakt.
