06/09/2026: Commemoration of the liberation of Ieper World War II / Herdenking bevrijding Ieper Tweede Wereldoorlog

On Sunday 6 September 2026 the official commemoration of the liberation of the City of Ieper on 6 September 1944 took place. The buglers of the Last Post Association took part in the ceremonies at the Belgian monument, at the French and Polish memorial plaques and they sounded the Last Post at the Menin Gate.

We will remember them.

Op zondag 6 september 2026 vond de officiële herdenking plaats van de bevrijding van de Stad Ieper na de Tweede Wereldoorlog op 6 september 1944. De klaroeners van de Last Post Association namen deel aan de herdenkingen aan het Belgisch monument, aan de Franse en Poolse herdenkingsplaten en zij verzorgden de Last Post onder de Menenpoort.

We zullen hen herdenken.

Erevoorzitter / Honorary Chairman Guy Gruwez OBE MNZM OAM MSM (1928-2026)

De voorzitter, de leden van de raad van bestuur, de klaroeners en alle medewerkers van de Last Post Association melden met diepe droefheid het overlijden van onze erevoorzitter, Guy Gruwez OBE MNZM OAM MSM, op 97-jarige leeftijd.

Guy Gruwez trad in 1953 toe tot de raad van bestuur van de Last Post Association. Van 1966 tot 2006 stond hij gedurende maar liefst veertig jaar als voorzitter aan het hoofd van onze vereniging. Ook daarna bleef hij als erevoorzitter nauw verbonden met de Last Post Association en met de dagelijkse Last Postplechtigheid onder de Menenpoort.

Meer dan zeventig jaar lang stelde Guy zich op uitzonderlijke en volkomen belangeloze wijze ten dienste van de herinnering aan de gesneuvelden van de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Met onvermoeibare toewijding, waardigheid en overtuiging droeg hij de boodschap van herinnering, herdenking en dankbaarheid uit. Hij speelde een bepalende rol in de ontwikkeling en internationale uitstraling van de Last Post Association.

Zijn uitzonderlijke staat van dienst genoot grote waardering en erkenning, niet alleen in België, maar ook ver daarbuiten. De talrijke nationale en internationale onderscheidingen die hem werden toegekend, getuigen van het diepe respect dat hij doorheen zijn lange leven heeft verworven.

De Last Post Association verliest een van haar belangrijkste boegbeelden, een inspirerende voorzitter en bovenal een bijzonder mens. Zijn levenswerk en zijn voorbeeld zullen blijvend voortleven in onze vereniging en in de dagelijkse Last Postplechtigheid.

Onze innigste deelneming en gedachten gaan uit naar zijn echtgenote Marie-Jeanne, zijn familie en allen die hem dierbaar waren.

It is with profound sadness that the Chairman, the members of the Board of Directors, the buglers and all members and volunteers of the Last Post Association announce the passing of our Honorary Chairman, Guy Gruwez OBE MNZM OAM MSM, at the age of 97.

Guy Gruwez joined the Board of Directors of the Last Post Association in 1953. From 1966 until 2006, he served as its Chairman for an extraordinary forty years. Thereafter, as Honorary Chairman, he remained closely associated with the Last Post Association and with the daily Last Post ceremony beneath the Menin Gate.

For more than seventy years, Guy devoted himself with exceptional dedication and complete selflessness to preserving the memory of those who fell during the First World War. With tireless commitment, dignity and conviction, he carried forward the message of remembrance and gratitude. He played a defining role in the development and international standing of the Last Post Association.

His outstanding record of service earned him the deepest respect and recognition throughout Belgium and far beyond. The many national and international honours bestowed upon him bear witness to the esteem in which he was held throughout his long life.

The Last Post Association has lost one of its most important figureheads, an inspiring Chairman and, above all, an exceptional human being. His life’s work and his example will live on within our Association and through the daily Last Post ceremony.

Our deepest sympathy and thoughts are with his wife Marie-Jeanne, his family and all those who held him dear.

Rest in peace, Guy. We will remember him.

98 YEARS / JAAR LAST POST ASSOCIATION - 02/07/2026

Op donderdag 2 juli 2026 vierden we de 98e verjaardag van de allereerste Last Post onder de Menenpoort in Ieper op maandag 2 juli 1928. We zullen hen blijven herdenken.

On Thursday 2 July 2026 we celebrated the 98th anniversary of the very first Last Post under the Menin Gate in Ypres on Monday 2 July 1928. We will continue to remember them.
