Today we honor Saint Nicholas of Tolentine (1245–1305), the first canonized saint of the Order of St. Augustine. For centuries, Nicholas has stood as a model for Augustinians—a witness to the life we strive to live: uniting deep contemplation with generous service to God’s people.

Born in Sant’Angelo in Pontano, Italy, Nicholas joined the Order shortly after the Grand Union and spent much of his early years preaching. For the last three decades of his life, he lived in Tolentino, serving as a confessor, ministering to the sick, and caring for the poor with compassion and humility. His life was marked by prayer, penance, hospitality, and fidelity to community life.

Nicholas is especially remembered as the Patron of the Holy Souls in Purgatory for his devotion to praying for the departed. Canonized in 1446, his body is venerated today in his Basilica in Tolentino.

The saints do not need our praise—we need their example. On his feast day, we look to Saint Nicholas of Tolentine as an enduring reminder of the Augustinian call: to balance love of God and love of neighbor, prayer and good works, contemplation and ministry.
