AI is moving from buzzword to practical tool in animal nutrition. That was the clear message at the 87th Minnesota Nutrition Conference in Mankato last week.

Milo, Andrea, Michael and Lenny represented BESTMIX, and Lenny Dauw presented on the role of AI in diet formulation and feed mill management in the swine session.

Two audience questions summed it up:
→ Will AI replace formulators?
No. It makes them more efficient and gives them better insights. Their expertise remains essential.
→ Can AI support production processes beyond extrusion?
Yes, wherever multiple parameters drive end-product quality. The key is enough high-quality data, and above all the right data.

Our other takeaways:
• AI is being applied looking forward (nutrition models, formulation), looking back (animal performance) and in manufacturing
• Nutrition models remain the backbone, especially in dairy
• Beef on dairy is growing and raising the value of dairy calves
• Years of drought are weighing on US beef producers
• Politics remain a concern for feed economics

It's a question worth sitting with, because the answer isn't always visible from where you stand.

Most plants we work with have good people in every role. The formulator takes real care over the recipe. The operator knows the line inside out. Quality control is thorough. And still, a batch comes off spec now and then, and when you look back, nobody did anything wrong.

What's usually missing is the conversation between them. Each team learns something valuable every day, but that knowledge tends to stay where it started. The recipe never hears what the line discovered, and quality's findings arrive once the product is already made.

When those three start informing each other, the same problems stop coming back.
