🚌 An empty bus is worse for the environment than a car. Myth or fact?
Fact. But it doesn’t take many passengers to change the equation.
Based on UK Government greenhouse gas conversion factors, an average local bus produces around 1.38 kg CO₂e per kilometer, compared with around 0.17 kg CO₂e for an average car.
That means the tipping point is around 9 passengers. Once nine people share the same bus instead of each traveling in a separate car, the bus comes out ahead in operational CO₂e emissions.
So yes, an empty bus emits more than a car. But it doesn't take a full bus to change the equation. 🚌

What makes a bus…a bus?
The answer is not only the engine, the chassis or the wheels.
It is also the small systems passengers notice without always thinking about them.
🚪 The Door System is where every journey begins, combining access, safety and passenger flow.
🌡️ The Climate System keeps the cabin comfortable, the windows clear and the journey pleasant in every season.
🛞 The Suspension absorbs the road before passengers feel it, turning heavy movement into a smoother ride.
Because a great bus is not only built to move people.
It is built to make the journey feel safe, smooth and comfortable.
👉 Which component do you think passengers notice the most?

The Busworld team was at IAA Transportation this week. Not only looking for buses, but for the technologies shaping the wider commercial vehicle industry.
Across the wider commercial vehicle industry, from electrification and charging infrastructure to hydrogen, safety systems, fleet digitalisation and software-defined vehicles, the direction is clear: vehicles are becoming smarter, more connected and more integrated into a larger mobility ecosystem.
For Busworld, this is exactly where we need to be: close to the technologies, manufacturers, suppliers and conversations that will influence the next generation of passenger transport.
