EARLY PREGNANCY ultrasound

An early pregnancy (viability or dating) ultrasound is typically performed between 6 and 12 weeks of gestation. It is used to confirm the pregnancy, locate the gestational sac, check for a heartbeat, and establish an estimated due date.

Depending on how far along you are and the position of your uterus, the sonographer may use one of two methods:

– Transabdominal: The ultrasound probe is moved over the outside of your lower abdomen.

– Transva**nal: A small, specialized probe is gently inserted into the va**na. This is very common in early pregnancy, as it provides a much clearer, up-close view of the embryo before it has grown enough to be easily seen through the abdomen.

Preparation depends on the type of scan you are having, so be sure to refer to your requisition form.

Enlarged veins are a less common symptom of breast cancer, typically grouped under “other unusual changes” or “skin changes.” This could suggest a blockage in a blood vessel, that might be caused by a lump or increased supply of blood to the breast, a sign that can accompany tumour growth.

As with any unusual changes in your breast (nipple/armpit), get it checked by your doctor and be sure to keep on top of your annual screenings. These changes should also be mentioned upon time of scheduled scan to become part of your record.

A woman is born with all the eggs she is going to have in her lifetime, decreasing in quality and quantity as she ages.

Age is the single most important factor affecting a woman’s fertility. While good health improves the chance of getting pregnant and having a healthy baby, it doesn’t override the effects of age.

A woman in her early to mid-20s has a 25–30% chance of getting pregnant every month. Fertility generally starts to slowly decline when a woman is in her early 30s, and after the age of 35 the decline speeds up. By age 40, the chance of getting pregnant in any monthly cycle is around 5%.
