Adding refrigerant would have fixed this refrigerator…

For about a week.

The customer, Mr. Miller, called because his Frigidaire had stopped cooling and he thought it might be time for a replacement.

After carrying out a full sealed system diagnosis, I confirmed the problem wasn’t the compressor.

The system had lost refrigerant because of a leak hidden in the Yoder loop.

The Yoder loop is tubing built into the cabinet that helps prevent condensation around the doors. Once it develops a leak, refrigerant slowly escapes until the refrigerator can no longer cool.

To restore the refrigerator, I:

• Recovered the remaining refrigerant.
• Cut out and bypassed the leaking Yoder loop.
• Installed a new filter drier.
• Pressure-tested the sealed system.
• Pulled a deep vacuum to remove air and moisture.
• Recharged the system with the factory-specified refrigerant charge.

After final testing, the refrigerator was back to normal operating temperatures and performing as it should.

This is why I never recommend simply “adding gas.”

If the leak isn’t repaired, the refrigerant will escape again. The real repair is finding the source of the leak and correcting it properly.
