The FROSIO Inspector course is an internationally recognised training and certification programme for people who inspect surface treatment/corrosion protection or insulation work. FROSIO has been operating since 1986 and its certification scheme is accredited to ISO 17024.

What the course involves

80 hours of training through a FROSIO-approved training organisation.

Covers inspection principles, surface preparation, coating application, corrosion protection, inspection methods, standards/specifications, documentation and reporting.

You must pass both a theoretical and practical examination to become certified.

The inspector's role is essentially to observe, inspect/test, verify compliance and report findings, rather than make decisions on behalf of the client unless authorised.

Certification levels

Level Certificate Typical experience

Level I White Little/no relevant experience; essentially an entry/apprentice level
Level II Green Minimum 2 years relevant experience
Level III Red Minimum 5 years relevant experience, including 2 years inspection experience

Certificates are generally valid for 5 years.

In practical terms: if you're starting out in coating/corrosion inspection, you can complete the course and work toward Level I. With sufficient industry experience, you can qualify for Level II (Green), which is the level commonly associated with actually carrying out inspection and reporting.
