More than 170 senior government officials from across Southern Africa have recently completed an intensive three-day training programme aimed at helping governments get greater value from limited public budgets.

Officials from ministries of finance, planning, health, education and infrastructure joined representatives from presidentsโ€™ and prime ministersโ€™ offices and central banks for the regional programme on cost-benefit analysis.

The training brought together participants from across the Southern African Development Community (SADC) at a time when governments in the region are under growing pressure to improve public services while facing tight fiscal constraints.

Rather than simply asking which policies governments would like to pursue, cost-benefit analysis seeks to answer a more practical question: which investments will generate the greatest benefits for each unit of public money spent?

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is convening the Macroeconomic Convergence Statistics Working Group (MSWG) Workshop from 21โ€“25 September 2026, bringing together representatives of Member States, technical experts and the SADC Secretariat to strengthen the production, harmonisation and use of macroeconomic statistics in support of regional economic integration and macroeconomic surveillance.

Reliable, timely and comparable statistics are fundamental to assessing macroeconomic developments and progress towards regional convergence. Within the SADC framework, robust statistics support the monitoring of key indicators, including inflation, fiscal performance, current account balances and public debt, while providing an essential evidence base for policy dialogue, surveillance and peer review.

The MSWG brings together specialised expertise in National Accounts, Consumer Price Statistics, Government Finance Statistics, Balance of Payments, and Monetary and Financial Statistics. The 2026 workshop builds on technical and capacity-building work undertaken since 2025, with emphasis on translating identified statistical gaps into concrete remedial actions, implementation measures and measurable regional deliverables.
