Grace Naledi Mandisa Matthews was born 7 December 1953 in Durban, granddaughter of Z.K. Matthews โ€” the first African to earn a BA from a South African institution, later Fort Hare's most influential academic, whose own paternal grandfather came from the Bamangwato under Kgosi Khama and settled at Shoshong, the very town this page has told so much history through. Z.K. Matthews attended Lovedale as a fellow student alongside Tshekedi Khama, and among his own Fort Hare students were Seretse Khama, Nelson Mandela, and Oliver Tambo โ€” meaning Naledi's grandfather personally shaped the education of the very man whose marriage crisis, exile, and presidency this page has told in full. He also wrote A Short History of the Tshidi Barolong, directly engaging with the Montshiwa lineage this page has already covered. Naledi's father, Joe Matthews, was himself an anti-apartheid activist and later a politician, born in Durban in 1929.

Pandor received her entire primary and secondary education in Botswana, matriculating from Gaborone Secondary School, and went on to earn a bachelor's degree from the University of Botswana between 1973 and 1977 โ€” alongside a certificate from the University of Swaziland. It was in Botswana that she met her husband, Sharif Pandor, and later converted to Islam after their marriage, taking the name Nadia; she has described her parents' response simply โ€” that God is God, and as long as she worshipped Him, they supported her. She went on to collect an extraordinary run of further qualifications: a Diploma in Education and MA from the University of London, a leadership diploma from Harvard Kennedy School, an MA in linguistics from Stellenbosch, and finally a PhD in education from the University of Pretoria in 2019 โ€” teaching along the way in London, Gaborone, at Taung College of Education, and as a senior lecturer at the University of Bophuthatswana, the very Bantustan-era institution this page has already traced through Mogoeng Mogoeng and Mamokgethi Phakeng's own education.

Elected to Parliament in 1994, Pandor became the first woman to chair the National Council of Provinces in 1999. She entered Cabinet in 2004 as Minister of Education, leading a full overhaul of the country's outcomes-based education system, then held Science and Technology twice, Home Affairs, Higher Education and Training, and finally Minister of International Relations and Cooperation from 2019 to 2024 โ€” South Africa's chief diplomat for five consequential years.

Pandor's tenure was defined by consistently outspoken positions on some of the most contested conflicts of the era. She criticised Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine before shifting to align with South Africa's official non-aligned negotiating stance, later granted Vladimir Putin diplomatic immunity to attend the 2023 BRICS summit despite an ICC arrest warrant against him, and criticised the ICC itself for what she called an uneven approach to international law violations. Her strongest and most consistent stance concerned Israel and Gaza: following the 7 October 2023 attacks, she held a phone call with Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh โ€” reported as an embarrassment to President Ramaphosa, who said he had no prior knowledge of it โ€” and the South African Jewish Board of Deputies called for her resignation over the episode. She went on to publicly call for the ICC to issue an arrest warrant for Prime Minister Netanyahu, and helped lead South Africa's landmark genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice, filed in January 2024. Her positions made her, by any measure, one of the most consequential and most polarising foreign ministers South Africa has had since apartheid ended.

Pandor lost her parliamentary seat in the 2024 general election as the ANC's national vote collapsed. She was appointed Chair of the Nelson Mandela Foundation's Board of Trustees in October 2024, and became Chancellor of Nelson Mandela University, inaugurated into the role on 8 April 2026 โ€” carrying forward, in institutional form, a family legacy of education and public service running directly back to her Tswana grandfather's own founding role in South African academic life.
