Day 2 of the IKI Growing Greener National Training to Introduce New Livestock and Land Management Approaches to Pastoralists in Betioky-Sud, Madagascar, is providing participants with practical insights into the “four legs of a cow”: nutrition, health, reproduction, and management.
Participants are exploring how proper nutrition supports growth and productivity, how good animal health prevents disease and reduces livestock losses, how effective reproduction sustains and improves herds, and how sound management brings these elements together. Just as a cow needs all four legs to stand firmly, livestock production requires all four areas to function together to build healthy, productive, and resilient herds.

RAENS Partners Co-Design Framework to Strengthen Agroecology Knowledge Sharing in Southern Africa

CCARDESA Calls for Faster Delivery of Agricultural Innovations at 22nd CAADP Partnership Platform

This afternoon in Betioky Sud, Madagascar, Mr Edmore Masire, Herding for Health Technical Advisor at Peace Parks Foundation, trained Conservation International staff in participatory facilitation skills during the National Training to Introduce New Livestock and Land Management Approaches to Pastoralists. The session equipped staff to engage communities effectively and promote meaningful community participation and ownership of the Herding for Health programme.

🌍🌱 Southern Africa’s Soil Health Experience Takes the Regional Stage!

CCARDESA brought the Southern African perspective on soil health and sustainable fertilizer use to the IGAD Regional Learning Event held from 14 to 17 September 2026 in Entebbe, Uganda. 🇺🇬🤝

Through technical presentations, panel discussions and the Soil Health Marketplace, CCARDESA showcased efforts underway across the SADC region to:

🗺️ Strengthen soil information systems
🌾 Promote sustainable fertilizer management
📱 Advance digital solutions
🌦️ Scale up climate smart agriculture

DAY 1 | NATIONAL TRAINING IN TOLIARA, MADAGASCAR

The National Training on Introducing New Livestock and Land Management Approaches kicked off today in Toliara, Madagascar, bringing together stakeholders to strengthen knowledge and promote sustainable approaches to livestock production and land management.

The training provides an opportunity for participants to share experiences, learn about innovative approaches, and explore practical solutions for improving livestock systems, land productivity, resilience, and sustainable natural resource management.

Through knowledge exchange and collaboration, the training aims to support the adoption of approaches that can contribute to more resilient and sustainable agricultural landscapes.

🇲🇼📱🌱 MALAWI TAKES DIGITAL AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION TO THE NEXT LEVEL! 🚜🎥🌾

What happens when agricultural knowledge speaks the farmer’s language? It travels further, becomes easier to understand and can make a real difference on the farm. 💡👩🏾‍🌾👨🏾‍🌾

Through the World Bank Group funded Food Systems Resilience Programme (FSRP), CCARDESA, in collaboration with Malawi FSRP and Scientific Animations Without Borders - SAWBO, has supported Malawi to strengthen its capacity to localise, record and disseminate agricultural training videos in Chichewa.

🎯 The Malawi team set an ambitious target of completing 20 localised agricultural videos. The enthusiasm was so strong that a training originally planned for three days was extended to five days at the request of the host country to allow participants to continue the translation and recording process.

But this initiative is about much more than producing videos. 🌍📲

The goal is to get practical agricultural knowledge into the hands of farmers through channels they already use and trust, including mobile phones 📱, WhatsApp 💬, radio 📻, social media 🌐, farmer networks 🤝, field demonstrations 🌱 and conventional extension services 🚜.

As Southern Africa faces increasing climate risks, these digital tools can also help farmers access timely information on technologies and practices that strengthen preparedness and resilience. 🌦️☀️🌧️🌾

💬 As Malawi FSRP Coordinator Dr Teddie Nakhumwa put it:

“This is not the end, it’s just the beginning.”

👏🇲🇼 From localisation to last mile delivery, Malawi is demonstrating how digital innovation and conventional extension can work together to take agricultural knowledge further and faster.

Day 3 of the ICKM Framework Development at Holiday Inn in Johannesburg, South Africa is progressing well!
RAENs Members are actively reviewing and refining the draft framework, contributing valuable insights and perspectives. Together, we are shaping it into a living document that will guide the implementation of ICKM across the RAENS network.

Day 2 of the RAENS ICKM Framework Development Regional Workshop is underway in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Building on the discussions and outputs from Day 1, today’s sessions are taking us deeper into how the RAENS ICKM Framework will work in practice.
Partners are working together to define roles, responsibilities, and partnerships, as well as the implementation, coordination, and governance arrangements needed to support effective information, communication, and knowledge management across the RAENS network.
The discussions are focused on integrating the Monitoring, Learning and Results Framework into the ICKM Framework to help RAENS track not only the knowledge generated and shared, but also how that knowledge is accessed, used, and contributes to learning and agroecological transitions.
