It’s that very special time of year wherein we all decide to go absolutely ham for a particular gourd! 🎃 The humble pumpkin, beyond being a symbol of the season, is also wildly delicious in every preparation (save pie, which is a mild abomination and excluded from present conversation). We’re starting October off strong with pumpkin drop cookies: you know ‘em, you love ‘em, you eat ‘em by the handful when you grandma breaks them out at Thanksgiving. Personally, I’m leaving out the nuts and raisins, but that’s up to you! They shouldn’t need any adornment before they head into the oven; however, if you feel like doing something a little fancy, dust some finishing sugar over the cookies after you’ve dropped them onto the baking sheet!

This one’s going to require a little free-form jazz in the kitchen, everyone. Seed-cake surfaces as a treat in Sense and Sensibility, and after doing a little research, it looks like the titular seeds are most likely caraway, which have a lovely earthy flavour. Today’s recipe comes to us not from the published recipes within this book, but from a newspaper clipping pasted to one of the inside cover pages – which is exciting, except for the little wrinkle that whoever clipped the recipe didn’t cut out the whole thing. All we’ve got is a caraway variation that says to use half-measures (of what?) and one and a half teaspoons of caraway seeds to an unknown quantity of cake batter. Maybe it’s best just to give this one a go? Make a basic cake (pound might be good!) and toss some caraway seeds in there just to see what happens. It’s probably great! Trust in Miss Austen’s taste! 🍰

Next up in our Austen month is another recipe inspired by Emma: baked apples! There’s technically two recipes at play here, and you can springboard from either to create whatever you’d like. Baked apples alone are a wonderful base for many, many flavours, but the second page of this simple recipe also contains directions for making stuffed baked apples with a raisin-walnut mixture (which can apparently be served hot or cold). Personally, I might lean much harder into the walnuts than the raisins, but the world is your oyster! Streusel, oats, caramel, cream cheese, pecans, toffee – try anything that tempts you and see where your heart leads! Just be sure to accompany your finished product with vanilla ice cream. 🍎🍨
