After school, your child may not be ready to talk.

And that doesn’t mean something is wrong.

Think about how much they’ve been doing all day.

Listening.
Learning.
Following directions.
Managing big feelings.
Figuring out friendships.

Then they walk through the door and we sometimes greet them with a whole interview.

“What happened today?”
“How was school?”
“Did you finish your work?”

Instead, try:

“I’m so happy to see you.”

And then give them a moment.

Let them choose what they need next.

A snack.
Some quiet.
A story.
A little time alone.

You’re not ignoring them.

You’re giving their nervous system room to reset before asking it to produce answers.

And when the words finally come, listen.

Sometimes the best conversation starts when we stop trying so hard to start it.
