Tuesday Tech Tip: If You Don’t Need It, Leave It at Home

Far too often, we see divers entering the water with every piece of dive gear they own clipped on and hanging from their equipment. While some items may be essential on certain dives, they are not required for every dive you do.

Every dive should begin with a plan, and part of that planning process is determining exactly what equipment is needed to safely and efficiently complete the dive. This includes considering environmental conditions, depth, overhead environments, team requirements, and the need for redundant equipment such as backup lights, spare masks, cutting devices, or additional safety gear.

Carrying unnecessary equipment can increase task loading, create entanglement hazards, affect streamlining, and make diving less efficient. The goal is not to carry the most equipment—it is to carry the right equipment for the dive you are conducting.

Plan the dive. Evaluate the risks. Bring what you need, and leave the rest at home.

Why is it important to log your dives?

Every Dive we do gives us an opportunity to learn, but the key is we need to remember.

Keeping a detailed dive log helps you:

✅ Track your experience and progression.

✅ Record weighting, exposure protection, and equipment configurations that worked.

✅ Monitor gas consumption
and dive times to improve efficiency.

✅ Document site conditions for future dives.

✅ Identify trends and areas to improve your skills.

✅ Maintain an accurate record for certifications and advanced training.

Whether you’re a new diver or an experienced technical diver, your dive log is one of the most valuable tools you own.

The best divers don’t just dive, they review, reflect, and continuously improve.

Log it today so you’re a better diver tomorrow.
