Yesterday, CSBD had the privilege of attending the 6th Annual Every Child Matters Walk, organized by the Tyendinaga Native Women’s Association.

The walk concluded at the Karonhiaktakie Sports Complex, where we witnessed the unveiling of the new Residential School Memorial, created to honour those affected by the residential school system and as a symbol of healing and strength.

The day was also a reminder that Reconciliation does not end on September 30th. It is an ongoing commitment that lives in our everyday actions and practices through remembering, honouring, listening to Indigenous voices and stories.

We are grateful to the Tyendinaga Native Women’s Association together with the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte for bringing the community together and for creating space for continued learning.

You can scan the QR code embedded on the Memorial or visit the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte website to learn more.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Today, we take time to honour the children who never returned home, Survivors, and Indigenous families and communities. We reflect on the truth of Canada’s residential school history and recognize the importance of listening, learning, and continuing the work of reconciliation.

At last week’s Community Services of Belleville and District AGM, we were honoured to screen Dear Grandpa, It’s Michael, a meaningful and inspiring film created by Tyrone Greenidge of My Three Angels Pictures Inc.

Inspired by the real-life story of Michael Whitell, the web series shares Michael’s journey growing up as an autistic person and the incredible impact of the love, encouragement, and support he received from his mother and grandparents.

What stood out to us was the series’ focus on seeing and celebrating the whole person, their strengths, experiences, relationships, challenges, dreams, and individuality. It explores themes of family, friendship, bullying, acceptance, finding your voice, and the importance of creating opportunities for people to participate, connect, and thrive in their communities.

We especially appreciated the focus on representation and breaking down barriers, with nearly half of the cast and crew being on the autism spectrum themselves. The series offers an authentic perspective while creating greater awareness and understanding of neurodiversity.

We are grateful to Tyrone for sharing this important work with our community. Dear Grandpa, It’s Michael is a thoughtful, hopeful, and powerful reminder of what can happen when people are surrounded by love, support, and opportunity. 💙
