Droplet Lab
Smartphone technology making the measurement of surface tension and contact angle easy.
Repellency is not mobility. A high contact angle tells you a drop beads up, not that it will roll off, and two surfaces can show the same angle yet shed water completely differently. Here's something that surprises a lot of people working with polypropylene: treating the surface (plasma, corona, etc.) doesn't create a permanent change. PP has a habit called hydrophobic recovery, where the surface starts reverting back toward its untreated, low-energy state within minutes to hours after treatment.
So if you treat a batch of PP parts in the morning and don't bond them until later in the shift, there's a real chance the surface has already started sliding back toward 'not ready for adhesive' by the time bonding actually happens.
The fix is simple: check the surface right before you bond, not just right after you treat it. A quick contact angle reading tells you whether the window is still open.
We put together a worked example showing what that drift can look like over a few hours (illustrative only, not a real production run, since every site's numbers will differ) -- and it's a good reminder that a treated surface is more like a perishable ingredient than a permanent fix.
Anyone run into this with your own PP bonding process? Curious how people are timing treatment and bonding on their lines.

If you formulate with surfactants and you are dosing to a value from a reference table, it is worth checking.
That number was measured in pure water, at a temperature that probably is not yours, in a matrix that definitely is not yours. Critical micelle concentration shifts with temperature, with water hardness, and with everything else in the mix.
The failure this causes is quiet. Dose above it and you are paying for surfactant that is forming micelles rather than doing the job you wanted. Dose below it and wetting goes inconsistent at a concentration the datasheet says should be fine. Neither shows up as a defect. Both show up as cost.

The top 5 to 10 angstroms of a surface decide how it wets, bonds, and repels, and bulk material specs miss it completely. Here's something we don't say enough: you shouldn't have to just trust us on accuracy.
Dropometer's measurement approach has actually been benchmarked against the KRUSS DSA100E — one of the most established contact angle goniometers on the market — in peer-reviewed research (Chen, Muros-Cobos & Amirfazli, 2018, Review of Scientific Instruments, with a companion study in Colloids and Surfaces A).
So when we say Dropometer gives you reliable numbers at a fraction of the cost of a $30,000+ instrument, that's not just a sales pitch — it's something you can go read and check for yourself.
Curious how the comparison holds up spec by spec? We wrote up the full breakdown: camera specs, weight, price, and all. Link in comments. What would you want to see tested next?

A brewery wants foam gone. A shampoo brand wants foam to last. They are solving the same problem from opposite ends.
Foam survives because of something called the Marangoni effect. When a soap film gets stretched thin, the surfactant spreads unevenly, and that unevenness pulls liquid back into the thin spot before it can burst. Strong effect, lasting foam. Weak effect, collapse.
So the engineer trying to stop foam ruining a filling line and the formulator trying to make a richer lather are reading exactly the same measurement, just aiming at opposite ends of it.
Which also means that if you are adding antifoam by trial and error, you are guessing along an axis you could simply measure.
Questions welcome.

Real talk: five Dropometer units, running 24/7, on a real production floor. That's not a lab demo, that's Zeus Inc.'s actual QC line.
They replaced a manual benchtop contact-angle unit that couldn't keep up with round-the-clock production. Their Corporate Quality Engineer, Brandon Barbee, put it this way: "Overall, we've been very impressed. It's been working really well and we really have enjoyed using it. It's a bit different than what we're currently using. It's much more technologically advanced than how we currently do it, which is good. Also, I wanted to let you know we completed our gage R&R study on the unit we have and it performed very well. We've been happy with the machine learning add in too, it saves a lot of time on measurements."
We love hearing about deployments like this because it's the real-world proof that matters more than any spec sheet. Curious how contact-angle or surface-tension testing fits into your own production process? We wrote up a full comparison of portable options for field and on-site testing, including this case study. Check it out and let us know what questions you have.

Here's a worked example from our emulsion stability page, not a customer story, that illustrates something worth knowing.
Three emulsifiers measure almost exactly the same on the property most formulators check. In the walkthrough, two produce stable emulsions and one breaks down within a month.
The difference isn't the final number. It's how quickly each surfactant reaches it. The two that work settle in around twelve seconds. The one that fails takes ninety five.
Emulsification happens in the instant new surface is being created, far too fast for a slow acting surfactant to keep up. By the time it arrives, the droplets have already merged.
Measuring that speed takes an afternoon. Waiting for a thirty day stability trial to tell you the same thing takes thirty days.
Questions welcome in the comments.

Some of our favorite stories are the slow ones. Back in 2020, the University of South Florida's Chemistry department first asked about using the Dropometer in their undergraduate teaching labs. Life happened, budgets shifted, and things went quiet for a few years.
In September 2023, USF Chemistry came back. By Spring 2024, 33 Dropometers were in their teaching labs, and today, more than two years later, they're still running, used by roughly 1,000 students every semester.
Total spend for the deployment was about $30,000, which works out to roughly $30 per student in year one (we're keeping that as a year-one estimate, not an ongoing number). Under the direction of Dr. Jhon J. Figueroa, Assistant Director of Teaching Laboratories, this became one of the largest classroom deployments we've supported.
Are you teaching surface science or materials concepts in an undergrad lab? We'd love to hear how you're doing it. Full case study linked below.

Here's a number that surprises people: according to ASQ, the average manufacturer loses 15-20% of revenue to what's called Cost of Poor Quality — and most of it isn't the scrap you can see on the floor. It's rework, warranty claims, and quiet order losses.
There's a simple rule behind this: $1 spent catching a problem before it happens is worth about $10 once it reaches assembly rework, and can be worth $100 once it becomes a warranty claim or recall. For adhesive bonding, the cheapest place to catch trouble is the surface itself, before parts ever meet the adhesive.
That's why we built the Dropometer to make a surface check something anyone on the line can run — five spots on a part, under ten minutes, no lab required.
Curious how your team currently checks surfaces before bonding — visual inspection, dyne pens, or nothing at all? We'd love to hear how you're handling this.
