The Siere Business Family Bursary is accepting applications for 2026.

We created the bursary to support students whose families are connected to the business community as they continue their education at Assiniboine College.

If you have a student in your family who may qualify, or you know someone who does, please pass this along. Sometimes an opportunity simply needs to reach the right person.

Applications are open until September 30, 2026.

One lesson we have learned after 19 years is that the strongest leaders are not the ones with all the answers. They are the ones who ask the best questions.

We have sat in hundreds of meetings over the years, and the leaders who make the biggest impact are usually the most curious. They ask their team what they are seeing, why a process is not working, what is getting in the way, and what success would look like.

Good questions encourage people to think. They create ownership and often uncover opportunities that would have otherwise been missed.

Asking questions does not mean you are uncertain. It means you are interested in understanding the whole picture before making a decision.

One of the best habits a leader can develop is replacing the urge to provide the answer with the discipline to ask one more question.

What question could you ask this week that might lead your team to a better solution?

When business owners think about costs, they usually think about the obvious ones: payroll, materials, equipment, fuel, and insurance. Those costs are easy to see because they show up on a financial statement.

The more expensive costs are often hidden.

Those costs rarely appear on a report, but they affect profitability every day.
One of the most valuable things an outside advisor can do is help identify the problems that have become so familiar that no one notices them anymore.

Sometimes the biggest opportunity is not doing something new. It is seeing something that has been there all along.

If someone looked at your business with a fresh set of eyes, what might they notice that you no longer see?

One lesson we have learned after 19 years is that the best decisions are rarely made in a hurry.

We understand that business moves quickly. Customers need answers, employees need direction, and opportunities come and go. But some decisions deserve more than a quick conversation in the hallway.

Does that mean every decision is perfect? Of course not. But thoughtful decisions almost always produce better outcomes than rushed decisions.

One of the most valuable things a leadership team can do is slow down just long enough to make the right decision instead of making the fastest one.

It is a simple habit, but it can change the direction of a business.

When was the last time your leadership team set aside time to think through an important decision before making it?

Being busy has almost become a badge of honour. We hear it all the time: “I have been so busy.” “I have not had a chance to think.” “I have been putting out fires all week.”

The reality is...being busy and being productive are not the same thing.

That does not happen overnight. It takes intention and trust.

The goal is not to become less involved in your business. The goal is to become involved in the areas where you create the most value.

If you are spending every day putting out fires, it may be time to ask why the fires keep starting. One of the most valuable things a business owner can do is create an environment where fewer fires happen in the first place.

Where did you spend most of your time last week...putting out fires or building a better business?

One of the questions we ask almost every client is, “What problem are you really trying to solve?”

It sounds like a simple question, but it often changes the direction of the conversation.

One of the things we enjoy most about our work is helping business owners look beyond the obvious and identify what is really holding the business back.

The right solution starts with understanding the right problem. That is why we spend so much time asking questions before we start offering answers.

After 19 years, we have learned that the first problem is not always the real problem.

What is one challenge in your business that might have a different root cause than you first thought?

One lesson we have learned after 19 years is that business owners rarely struggle because they are not working hard enough. In fact, it is usually the opposite.

Most owners work incredibly hard. They put in long hours, solve problems, answer questions, and do whatever it takes to keep the business moving forward.

The businesses that make the biggest improvements are usually led by owners who make time to step back and think. They ask what is slowing them down, what they should stop doing, what systems need to change, and what would make the biggest difference over the next year.

Those conversations often create more value than another ten hours of hard work.

Working hard will always be important. Taking the time to work on your business instead of only in your business is what creates lasting change.

When was the last time you gave yourself the time to simply think about your business?

One of the most common goals we hear from business owners is, “We want to grow.”

Growth can be exciting, but growth is not always the right goal.

Growth magnifies what already exists.

Before asking, “How do we grow?” it may be worth asking a different question... “Are we ready to grow?”

Sometimes the best investment a business owner can make is not finding more customers. It is building a business that is ready for more customers.

What part of your business would benefit the most from becoming stronger before it becomes bigger?

People occasionally ask us what a typical week looks like at Siere. The truth is...there really is no such thing as a typical week.

On Monday, we might be working with a leadership team on their strategic plan. Tuesday could be spent helping a business owner understand why sales are growing but profits are not. Later in the week, we may be facilitating a Board discussion, reviewing financial information, or working with a management team to improve how they communicate and make decisions.

Every business is different, and that is one of the things we enjoy most about what we do.

After 19 years, one thing has become very clear. Successful businesses are not successful because they avoid problems. They are successful because they are willing to talk about them, challenge their thinking, and make decisions before small issues become big ones.

We feel very fortunate that business owners trust us enough to invite us into those conversations. It is a responsibility we never take for granted.

Thank you to every client who has trusted us over the years. We appreciate the opportunity to be part of your journey.
