I know we have a lot of work to do here in BC with municipal and provincial elections now compounded by the Federal Liberals direct attack on our constitutional right to strike, but this is too true not to share before it disappears.

Every little bit can help

Prime Minister Mark Carney has continued to stay silent while Danielle Smith's UCP government pushes U.S.-style, for-profit health care into Canada.

We've been pushing him to act, and he hasn't budged. So we're taking it up a notch.

Liberal Caucus members are gathering in Ottawa this week, and we're launching a high-impact ad blitz to reach them: running our ads at the airport and on a mobile billboard truck circling Parliament Hill.

We need to raise $6,000 to make it happen. Chip in today to help us hold Carney accountable:

Nothing our movement does is more important than fighting to ensure every worker comes home from their workday as safe and healthy as when they left.

Yesterday, we brought labour's priorities to the Workers' Compensation Board's (WorkSafeBC's) Board of Directors. Sussanne and Hermender were joined by our Occupational Health & Safety Standing Committee co-chairs Barb Nederpel (Hospital Employees' Union) and Julia McKay (USW District 3).

Together, we underlined the importance the recent progress we've made together, such as the new combustible dust regulation and stronger provisions on tower crane safety. And we drove home the urgent need for action on our key priorities, including...

✅ taking action to improve frontline services and support for injured workers, and end the growing delays so many are facing

✅ moving ahead with proposed changes to regulations on psychological health and safety as well as harassment and violence, and improving them to better serve workers

✅ improving chronic pain policies and care to ensure early intervention, proper treatment and fair compensation

✅ ending the practice of subsidizing a rate freeze for employers, and using any available funds instead to improve compensation, care and injury prevention — which are, after all, at the heart of the WCB's mandate.

These are far from the only health and safety issues we're working on. All of them are important. And to the workers they affect directly, they couldn't be more urgent.

Two words with massive effect

Systemic ageism creates daily obstacles for older persons across Canada—from workplace discrimination to gaps in healthcare access. International Longevity Centre Canada champions a rights-based approach that transforms societal barriers into legally enforceable protections, ensuring every older person maintains their independence, dignity, and autonomy.

Identifying systemic barriers allows us to advocate directly for the legally binding rights that dismantle age discrimination.

Stand up against ageism. Share this post to support a rights-based approach for older persons!

The fall issue of the SAGE Magazine is here with a special article on Canada's role in the UN Convention. ILCC extends our thanks to the National Association of Federal Retirees for their work in support of the convention .

At a May 2026 event, Margaret Gillis, founder and president emerita of the International Longevity Centre (ILC) Canada says, “Canada should lead the call for a UN Convention on the Rights of Older Persons because growing older should never mean losing rights, voice or dignity. A convention would transform principles into protections — challenging ageism, demanding accountability and affirming that every person has the right to age
with respect, equality and purpose.”
